Do you know what kind of toads are in your area? It would be good to verify and know if they are actually poisonous.

I thought of you when I saw this post. I am so sorry for meika. I still think of you every time I see the bufo toads in our back yard. I do worry so. My dh is a great toad killer though.

My heart stops every time I see this thread pop up.

My DD and I killed a big one Monday in the front yard where the dogs do not go. I tried pouring Clorox bleach on it (read that online), it made him crazy and he hid between a rock wall and a tree. Expected him to be dead an hour later, but not..... he was bleached orange on his head and his poison glands had emptied, but he was very much alive. My DD killed him with a shovel & put him in the trash.

I hate these things SO much.

I'm sorry. I'll stop bumping this thread. It's just so frustrating seeing these things out here.

Gosh I hope we don't have those here. I think about you and Meika often and I hate to say it but everytime I see a frog. YorkieFan wants to stop bumping this thread but I think people really need to know about these toads. Meika's story could save a lot of lives. I have a Havanese that loves to chase frogs around our pond.I think they are what we call tree frogs. I do not let her do it anymore because of Meika. I used to love watching frogs chase bugs on our porch but now I think differently about them.

Aren't they usually toads and not frogs if away from the water? I don't know if you have the Texas toad in Houston like we do near San Antonio, but if so, watch out because they're venomous. Not anywhere near as bad as the Cane toad like Meika bit into :( but they are still very bad news for small dogs like yorkies. Not every toad in Texas is poisonous though. I don't think you have Cane toads in the Houston area, but they're in the Rio Grande Valley south all the way into South America, they're in Florida, Hawaii, I believe Australia, and I think parts of the US Gulf Coast. :(

I really do not know. I know we have really huge bullfrogs too. They sometimes sound like cats crying. I actually live very close to the coast. My Yorkie and my Chihuahua are almost never outside but my other dogs are. I've looked up poisonous toads/frogs before and I think I will do it again to be sure.

Yorkiefan.... please don't worry at all about bumping this thread. I am so glad that this is a place we can all come together and share information, support each other, and educate others about the danger of Bufo toads.

I will always be sad about Meika's tragic loss, but spreading the word about the danger is very important, so that she did not die in vain. I just never want to see any other pup have to die this way.

Please do not stop. We need to spread the awareness of this danger so nobody has to go through what Meika did.

Yeah it's a good thing to get the info out there. I had no idea really about toads. I don't think we have any here in the desert though.

There is actually an extremely poisonous desert toad, bufo alvarius, but it doesn't live in the LA area. Here is its US habitat:
