Nails cut to short. :( I took Milo to vet to get his shot, anal glans express and his toe nails clipped. I haven't had his nails cut in about a month so they were long. The vet cut them really short and they bleed. He said that the quick has grown out to long so he needed to cut them back. Not all of them bleed but i was kinda mad because I thought he was cutting them to short. Does the quick grow out that far? I haven't had that to happen before. |
Geez, poor baby. I wouldn't think that it would grow out in a month? |
The longer the nails grow the farther down the quick will go but if the nails are just trimmed more often the quick will slowly work its way back down at least that what I have been told. Cutting them in the quick hurts just like it would hurt a human and it can also make them scared to get the nails cut in the future. I personally would never go back to that vet he obviously doesn't care about when Milo is feeling pain and that is scary. |
Poor little Milo! I have never heard of a vet or anyone cutting them shorter than the quick, unless by accident! It makes no sense to me. If they have gotten long, normally they cut off as much as they can without hitting the quick and then do it every couple of weeks as the quick shortens. I feel bad that Milo and you went through this. |

Poor Milo...I know that if the nails are long, you can sometimes accidentally hit the quick...but at that point, you back off and don't cut them as short. You don't just keep going and getting more that bleed!! Are you trimming his nails on a monthly basis?? If so, I can't really see them getting out of control long. I have a nail grinder that I use on Princeton. I can't use it for Ricky bc he's too fussy with his feet being touched...but I like the grinder better. It takes longer, but I don't have to worry about cutting the quick. |
my vet's manager comes to my house to cut my babies nails..(perks of her being the mother of my daughter's boyfriend) and she said lola must have always gotten her quick cut in her previous owners life because she flips during nail trims and thankfully Robin is very good and has never made them bleed. I would not return to that vet......hoping Milo has a much better experience next time poor lil man. |
I agree 100% !!! I wouldn't be surprised if your baby ever let someone cut his nails again! |
I felt so bad for him. They have always cut his nails and i just didn't understand why he was getting them so short. He didnt act like they hurt him after we got home but I had to give him a baby aspirin and benadril because he was sore from the shot. We have used this vet for about 15 years and this is the first time this has happened. |
The vet did that???:confused: You NEVER cut the quick no matter how long the nails are. If the nails are overgrown you have to start trimming a little at a time until the quick is back up where it is supposed to be. If it had only been a month since his nails were last clipped they should not have been that bad. I'm sorry but I would not let that vet within a mile of any of my pets. Are you using a stypic pen on the poor little doll's nails? I cannot imagine a vet, of all people, doing such a cruel thing to a dog!:mad: Most dogs that have had the quick cut, even accidentally, never forget that experience and are terrified of having their nails cut afterward. My condolences to you and your little doll. |

Poor Milo, I would not let that vet near him again. It's bad enough when you accidently cut them to short. I know I have a time doing Luci's be cause I accidenty cut her one to short they do not forget. Every ttime she see the trimmer's she hide's. Anne /Luci:p |
Oh my goodness - I'd be SO ticked off :mad: :( ! You never, ever want to cut the quick on purpose as it's very, very painful and can cause the dog such trauma that it ruins all future trims bc they're utterly terrified (this is what the groomers caused in our Wylie). If/when the quick is too far grown out, all you need to do is trim it little-by-little each week until it is further back - and then you can space out the trimmings to every couple/three weeks. |
