New momma needs advice Hi everyone!! I need some help, I found a food my picky puppy LOVES (finally), the Fresh Pet Select for puppies, but I'm worried about tooth decay being as though it is wet. At first, he would eat Rachael Ray's Nutrish if I put a little honey or cheese on top (he wasn't so happy with his food without a little something). When I mixed his food with the Fresh Pet Select, he devoured everything but the Rachael Ray Nutrish!! I figured he doesn't like it, so I need a dry kibble to balance out the Fresh Pet. Any suggestions?? My baby is 11 wks old & weighs 2 pounds. When I got him at 8 wks he weighed 1.5 pounds so he is gaining weight and I've only had to give him the Nuti-cal 2 or 3 times. I know that a lot of devoted loving mamas here cook for their dogs or do raw - needless to say that is 'wet' or wet food texture too, so although you raise a valid concern about tartar control I think as long as you provide plenty of good options like smoked bones and dental chews (which will have the same effect of breaking up tartar as kibble would if not better) along with regular brushing your little one will have healthy teeth. I do offer a kibble, my girl is little and I feel that free choice kibble keeps her in the glycemic safety zone, we use natural balance small breed bites for our dry because they have such a teeny tiny kibble. We are on duck and potato grain free right now but I think I would prefer to use a legume based food - I heard they recently came out with one. Zignature had a lamb and pea recipe I really liked but their kibble (albeit the sb size) was a bit too large for us. Good luck! :) |
If you can incorporate brushing his teeth into your grooming routines, I don't think feeding him wet food is going to be a problem. Or maybe you could try sneaking in few kibbles in the wet food. Zoey's bit picky about food so I always mix 50/50 with kibbles/wet. Works 95% of the time. But when she's in one of those particular moods and won't eat the food even if it's all wet, I add bit of chicken broth and that does the trick. :) |

Your dog has taste, you don't need kibble if you are feeding the other food. If you are happy with that food and your dog is healthy on that food just make sure to brush it's teeth regularly. Dogs tend to gulp their food so putting kibble in the mix isn't going to help. You may wish to look into recipe books for home cooking that will allow you to rotate the proteins and organ meats in her diet |
The dog doesn't have to have dry food unless you want him to have it. Kibble does nothing to keep teeth clean. Most dogs that eat kibble need their teeth cleaned yearly. Kibble is highly processed food and most have ingredients that actually encourage tarter. If you like the food he likes and you consider it a healthy diet then don't worry about kibble. |
