New to Yorkie Talk
 
Not sure how this works, but I need lots of info. I am supposed to meet a guy Saturday. He lives about 60 miles away, so he said he will meet us half way. He is going to bring his four Yorkies CKC registered, for sale for $300 and let us choose one. I am concerned about health problems of Yorkies, housebreaking, what is best food.

Major :redflag:, that $300 on a cute puppy can turn into thousands in vet bills if you buy from this stranger in the middle of nowhere. You can bet he did no health or genetic testing on the parents...please reconsider getting a pup from this person.

Please be very, very cautious buying from someone who may be a low quality breeder. Just fyi, it's preferable to buy a yorkie that is AKC registered, not CKC.

yes please be very cautious...when you see the puppy check it's ear...gums and body just to be sure it is clean and appears to be healthy. maybe they just need to sell them off but that raises a red flag to me as the others have chimed in about.

Because my friend bought a dog from my breeder, I got a deal for $700. I picked him up from the house and they told me he was fine. He wasnt he had coccidia and giardia and the giardia took 4 months to get rid of! Thank god my aunts a vet technician and helped me out otherwise I'd be flat broke! Be careful! My baby is healthy now but it took alot of work in the beginning. Mine is AKC registered

As for food, they gave me iams puppy food, but he had a chicken allergy and I switched to dick van pattens grain free food. It's a little expensive but for good food it's worth it. Now he's on Merricks grain free food bc he would not eat the dick van pattens. He loves it. I would advise not buying food store brands bc they're filled with unwanted stuff. Always go to a pet store. I pay $16.99 for 4lbs of food. It's the only food hell eat and it's healthy so I think it's worth it. Also always pay attention to their teeth, yorkies are prone to gum disease. I give bailey a nylabone dental stick once a day and brush his teeth and his teeth are perfect. He also loves the dental sticks, they're like doggie crack to him. Good luck!

It is common practice for puppy mills and the brokers for puppy mills to meet prespective buyers some where other than their own property. Yes, you should be very fearful about health problems buying a pup out of a vehicle. The worst part, other than the way the dogs are abused, is that buying pups from them is helping them to continue their horrific treatment of the animals.

These people are very deceptive. Just like other types of abusers they look and act much like most other people. They have their story and they stick to it. They just don't want you to see how the animals are kept and the conditions that the poor creatures are in.

A reputable breeder will gladly invite you to their home and show you both parents so you know what to expect from your pup. They will show you their facilities and show you what kind of testing has been done on the dogs to prevent the breeding of genetic defects into their line. The popularity of small dogs has caused all kinds of shady breeding facilities to spring up throughout the country. Do your homework before you buy and please don't help support animal abuse.

If I were you, I would cancel the meet up. You should research reputable breeders and get a healthy, well bred yorkie instead. Are you interested in researching?

Oh I'm so glad! It is definitely worth it to pay more for a good dog from a good breeder who has worked hard to produce a healthy well adjusted puppy :thumbup: the breeder list through akc is often a good place to start or if you are not devoted to the young pup idea a rescue can be a great option- they already have a good handle oftentimes on any health issues or food allergies the dog may be dealing with and then they usually are already altered and vaccinated. I hope someone in your area responds with more specific references. Good luck and welcome to yt :)

Just noticed the language in cancelled buy - steer clear of dealer, steer toward hobby breeder and research red flags t look out for :wink:

Cancel the meeting. If they won't allow you to come to them find someone else. I know 60 miles seems like a long way but these sweet dogs steal your heart and I'd drive 1,000s for mine. I know everyone wants a good deal but dogs are expensive. They need good quality food, treats and water. You have to be careful what hair product and medicines you use for them. They also need a lot of time and love from you. Some people think they have a "bad" puppy/dog. But a lot of the time they are just lonely and acting out to get attention. If you decide to join the yorkie family you have come to the right place to share and seek advice.

Most people will tell you to contact the breeders on the YTCA website and that is a good start. But you can also go to the AKC website and do a search for a conformation or specialty club in your state. Those people have breeder referral contact people that can give you names of reputable breeders. Anyone that is involved in the YTCA is also a member of a local conformation or specialty club. The roots of good breeding start in the local clubs. Here is a link.

There are bad apples even in the show circuit so always get good references and check everyone out. Find out what questions to ask so you don't go into anything blind.
