They call those mixes "cute"? :( Almost every single one made me sad for the dogs. |
I don't think its sick. I don't think its right to say designer dog lol. Their just cross breeds (mutts) I think its a little ridiculous to purposely try to breed these cross breeds together, though some of them are cute saying their any better than a purebred is silly. I have a yorkie/poodle cross. Though she wasn't bred on purpose it happened and I adopted her, yorkie dad and poodle mom. I've seen tons of those dogs from that post a lot lately though on craigslist and ebay and even breeder selling these designer dogs :( all dogs need love no matter purebred or not. |
I don't think most of them are cute. I love mutts, I grew up with a complete mutt and she was the sweetest dog ever, lived to be 18 and never had a health problem. I don't agree with intentionally mixing dogs or paying tons for them though. My friend has a corgi/german shepard, someone dumped the puppies at her vets office. She's spent a lot of money on his joints and has to be extremely careful about him jumping. I think it's because of the mix, he's a bit smaller than a GSD with corgi legs. |

I'm not sure why the OP called the article "sickening". It just showed pictures of mixed breed dogs. We rescued a yorkie mix and a shorkie and they are darling. No, they aren't purebred dogs, but they deserve a good home just as much as purebred yorkies or other breeds. |
There are some people who just have to have a pet that is exceedingly different or even ugly in order to call attention to themselves. Sadly, most will not find the results of this type of breeding endearing. The ones with misshapen heads and bodies and the ones with genetic health problems will end up in shelters, suffering terribly before being put down. You do not see those poor creatures on "news" sites or fancy puppy mill sites. Shame on people for doing such terrible things to these animals just to satisfy the whims of humans. |

only going to add to the rescue and shelter numbers imo.....they are getting thousands for these "designer mutts" and from a breeders opinion I wonder does it really better the breed????? |
I would constantly worry during say a Puggle pregnancy that the mandible would come from the Beagle and the maxilla from the Pug in the puppies and the dog forever have bite problems and jaw pain. Or in a Doxi-Beagle mix, the hind legs and pelvis from the Beagle and the forelegs and part of the spine from the Dachshund and the puppy would have a lifetime of a living with high behind with too much stress on the spine and shoulders from his short forelegs. With mixes, what if the parts don't articulate properly due to part of the skeleton being from one breed and other parts from the other breed? What if the organs aren't properly sized for the size of he dog? What if you mix a Chihuahua with a bulldog and a puppy gets the bulldog's bulky size and musculature and the Chi's heart and lungs? It's kind of like playing Dr. Frankenstein to me to mix breeds with the puppies left to pay the price of living with the mistakes of parts of each very different parent. |
My best dog was a Heinz 57. Closest description is a yellow lab with a wee bit of Chesapeake Bay retriever. I'm sure it was more complicated than that. I didn't see any sickening photos in the article. "Ugly" came to mind on one or two. My thought is as long as they live in loving homes, more power to them. Mixes seem to have fewer medical issues. |
I'm not seeing this article as sickening. They're not saying they promote 'designer' dogs at all - in fact it's never even mentioned. While some misguided people may see this article and think "oh I want one just like that!" (which does promote designer breeding) -- I think others will see this article as just what it seems to be - pictures of awkwardly cute mutts. I don't think any of these dogs are ugly at all. That said, if they wanted to do it right (right imo), they should've said something along the lines of "mutts are adorable animals too, so don't hesitate to adopt a mutt at your shelter"....that's what I see as the unfortunate missing element. Is the article a bit careless, given what it could ostensibly (but not intentionally) promote? Yes, I suppose it is. |
