Newly adopted yorkie doesnt eat Hi Guys! My husband and I adopted a 12 weeks old yorkie and he's been with us for almost 2 days. My husband and I are so worried because he is not eating well and if he does he only eat very little. What worry me most is that he just sleep all the time. Any suggestion on what to do with him? Thanks.. |
Hi, Congratulations on your new little guy. Are you feeding him the same food that the breeder was feeding him? If not, it may be that he just doesn't like the brand your feeding him. Sometimes switching their foods abruptly can upset their stomachs. He may also be stressed out because he's in a new environment. Have you tried giving him any canned food? You really need to get some food in him right away. Hypoglycemia is a big concern for small breed dogs and the fact that all he is wanting to do is sleep, worries me. I would have a high calorie supplement such as Nutrical on hand just in case. You can usually get it from your vet or a pet store. You can also use Karo syrup if need be. If he doesn't start eating for you, you really need to contact your veterinarian. There are a bunch of people on here with a ton of useful information so hopefully someone else replies with some suggestions for you. |
Also make sure he's warm... pups on the floor in a bed can still be chilly. Offer him some warmed food this may help. Have you taken him in for a vet check (1st time puppy check up)? Be sure to follow syrup/Nutrical with some protein. Are his gums pink? |
Thank so much for your informations! We were feeding her with the same food that the breeder gave him. But he ignores it. Tonight my husband bought a dog food in can and we gave him a little bit of it, he jump off his bed and ate it. I hope will be fine.. |
Kcj: yes his gums are pink. I check them from time to time. Thank you for the infos |
Yorkiemom76: thanks for the infos. Tonight we gave him an organic dog food in can. And we are glad he ate a little bit of it. Yesterday we were feeding her the same type of food that the gave him. Buts he ignores it or sometimes a ate a little bit of it. I hope he will be fine.. |

Have you tried feeding him boiled chicken breast? That's what I usually feed my two when they don't feel well. You could try soaking the kibbles in chicken broth (sodium free). There were few times where I had to hand feed Zoey b/c she wouldn't eat. I don't hand feed her every day now though there are few times when she wants to be spoiled. :) |
It's the food soft enough? My new yorkie puppy seems to prefer when I add warm water to her food to get it soft and.., well, warm. Once it cools down she isn't as interested. Is he playing? I agree he could be a little depressed..give him lots of love and patience, puppies love to discover new things. He won't get on the schedule you desire immediately, but with time I'm sure you'll have some luck. |
The low energy is very concerning. Have you contacted the breeder yet? A pup that is not eating well can easily become hypoglycemic which can result in death. Has the pup been checked very carefully by a vet? Any stomach upset? Diarrhea? |
Nutrical is a supplement that you can give your puppy.... it will help if there is any issues with hypoglycemia.... I have used it before and always kept it handy.... puppies love the taste of it. Just a little dab on your finger can work wonders! If you are concerned the pup is sleeping too much and not eating enough, it definitely could be the issue... you can buy it at Petsmart... maybe your vet carries it too (actually I would think most of the "better" pet supply stores would have it.) Best wishes that this concern gets resolved... Hope this info in the responses on this thread helps!!! Keep us posted! |
