Reputable blood lines and breeders I am looking to get Guido a little friend. I live in Pittsburgh, PA and it is near impossible to find a reputable breeder who is sincerely breeding for the better of the breed. I want to make sure that I get a healthy puppy. Many of the so called "breeders" around here advertise the "rare" parti, chocolate, and other genetically altered garbage as a marketing technique. So I would never purchase from them. I am familiar with the Durrer line but I am no expert when it comes to bloodlines. Is anyone familiar with any other recognized healthy bloodlines? Any recommendations on breeders? |
The YTCA website is one starting point. You can also look for breed and conformation clubs in your area. Go to the AKC website and do a club search American Kennel Club - Club Search and Directory Your area should have some good clubs near by. Those clubs will list a breeder referral person that can get you started in the right direction. It is well worth the trouble to do a good investigation in order to get your dream pup. A pup should be a family member for many years to come so be particular and do your research. Don't support breeders that devalue the breed. |

Rigair Yorkies health tests their dogs and I would recommend their lines or buying directly from them. Also, Deb Sillers (Amazing Yorkies) health tests and has a 5 year health guarantee on her puppies and I would recommend her as well. |

American Kennel Club - Delaware Valley Yorkshire Terrier Club, Inc. - WEST CHESTER - PA - 529 They have a breeder referral person. |
Im from PA and got my puppy from a breeder near Philadelphia (which is kinda far for you). PM if you want her name |

Someone had posted awhile back that they were looking for reputable breeders & YTCA was suggested. She said she got her previous Yorkies from a YTCA breeder & they had inherited health problems. The above quoted are excellent advice! |
As far as blood lines, I LOVE the Durrer look/lines. My Marcel (my avatar) is Durrer. I'd suggest you go to ytca.org and see if there are some breeders listed in your area. Otherwise, some of those ytca breeders will use air couriers to hand deliver their pups. |

I think you would find $1000 to $1500 to be pretty average for a pet quality pup from a good show/breeder. I suppose it could vary in some areas but not by a lot. When you start getting up in the $2000 and above range you are talking breeder quality and a reputable breeder is not going to sell breeder quality to someone who just wants a pet and a pet owner should not pay that much either. A good breeder is more interested in finding the right homes for the pups than a big sale price but they do have a lot of expense to try to recoup with the puppies. People who put bigger price tags than that on a pet quality pup are ripping people off. If you look at a show dog they are everything and more than what the puppy mill ads promise but do not deliver. |
