Help Luxating patella in 8 yr old yorkie Hi I am new to the community my name is Kim and my baby is Paris and is 8year old female yorkie. She is the love of my life as all yorkies are to their mommies!! Paris started limpimg the other day she jumped off my bed and I think she landed wrong. I brought her to the vet immediately and the vet said she has LP. I made an appt with surgeon for opinion and another vet for an opinion. I am going crazy with worry, fear and am so sad about this happening to Paris? Has anybody had an older yorkie have surgery and do well? Paris is in good health walks daily, not right now but usually walks two miles per day. Paris isn't yelping or showing she's in pain. I guess I am just asking for experiences with surgery? I am terrified for Paris, thankyou for your help. |
Welcome! Sorry to her about Paris' LP. My 8 year old has grade 4 in both knees and so far as avoided surgery. Her vet said as long as it's not bothering her to just keep an eye on it. She has been grade 4 for most of her life. My other 8 year old had grade 3 in one knee and jumped off the bed and couldn't walk on it. After 3 vets and a orthopedic surgeons advice that she need surgery she had it fixed. She was about 4 when she had surgery. Pixie had her surgery by a board certified orthopedic surgeon and she did really well during and after surgery. She has always been a low energy dog so keeping her quiet wasn't too difficult. I believe AlaskaYorkie's Eddie was about 9 years old last year when he had LP/CCL repair and he did very well. Hopefully he can chime in here. Welcome to YT, and I'm sorry about your pup's injury. Mine had the same problem last year and she had surgery and is doing great, but she was 3 years old. Also, since you are new here, your first several posts won't show up as soon as you post them. She might not need surgery she may just need some anti inflammatory medicine and rest for a few weeks. Not all LP results in needing surgery there are some who go there whole life's with it and never need surgery. My yorkie had the surgery and besides it being expensive it was rough on her. I had no choice because her ACL was tearing but I would always try a conservative approach first unless she is in extrem pain and the orthopedic surgeon doesn't think there is any chance the conservative approach will work. |
My Louie was diagnosed with LP (stage 4 in both back legs) about 2 years ago, and so far has had no real problems. Every once in a while he has to kick his leg out to pop the knee back into place, but the vet says as long as he seems to be okay with it, we don't have to worry. Maybe yours won't end up needing surgery? |
