Hello. New dog owner advise. Hi. Glad I found this place. I adopted a 5 year old bitch this week from a family who where never around due to changing work conditions. I am new to dog ownership and need a small bit of help. Her hair is matted around her snout ears and feet . I was trying to brush them out but this seemed to make her flinch a bit. I have washed her with doggy shampoo/conditioner. Should I just cut them out? She seem very healthy but her last hair cut makes her look bad anyway. How soon will it grow back. I would like to make her look great but it seems like a long way off. Another basic question. Feeding. She was being fed the cheapest dog food which simply stinks in my house. I bought her some of this Pedigree Dry Small Dog Chicken 2.7Kg - Groceries - Tesco Groceries and this Cesar With Chicken And Turkey 150G - Groceries - Tesco Groceries I was thinking one 150g carton of the Cesar dog food and a handful of nuts mixed in? Does that sound like the correct amount? Im very aware of the importance to get the amounts right as my mothers dog suffers from bad joints due to overfeeding. I love this little thing and see seems very happy here. I have loads of questions though. This is her. Its a imageshack link. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640x480q90/42/p58y.jpg Thanks... |
Awww, she looks so sweet! Bless your heart for taking her in - I'm sure she'll be so much happier with someone who can pay attention to her and give her the love she needs. You sound like you're already wrapped around her paw :). Yeah, I'd probably just cut those mats out if they're too close to the skin for combing out. She may look choppy/funny for a bit, but it will grow out in time. Mine are very sensitive to brushing around the face too, so I'm not surprised yours is. As far as food, I'm not sure of the amount bc you didn't mention her weight...but as long as you're feeding close to the guidelines on the bag of food and her body condition feels right (not too fat, not too thin), you should be fine. WELCOME TO YT!!! :) |
Hello, welcome to YT! Your new yorkie is lovely! I'm glad she is living with you now. With regards to the food issue - would you consider changing her to a better quality food? Some foods that you might want to consider are Barking Heads, Lily's Kitchen or Land of Holistic Pets. Many members at YT feed Royal Canin Yorkie and Orijen, both of these are available here in Ireland. Nature's Menu do wet food if you want to mix wet through the dry food. A good quality food will help her overall health, including her joints. How much she should get each day depends on her weight and level of activity. Barking Heads food and Nature's Menu can be bought at Petworld, Land of Holistic Pets can be ordered at dogfooddirect.ie and Lily's Kitchen, Orijen and Royal Canin can be ordered at zooplus.ie. I understand you might not want to feed any of these foods, just giving some options :) Looking forward to seeing more pics of your cutie pie:) |
ah thanks. Just took her out for a run and she is perfect on the lead. The last owners seemed to have done a good job with her, its just they where not around enough for her. Im guessing these dogs need brushed down daily She is still feeling very odd but seems to come around when I walk in the door from being away for 20 mins. On her rear legs and tail wagging excited. Love that. My son and I are so happy. Was looking for a mature dog and was willing to pay, this girl popped up for free. So we spent the money on a good harness and a few basics. Adds up quick. Worth it. She is a little shakey in the car. I need her to travel as we go away to see relatives every so often. The last owner said she gets sick. Would human car/sea sickness drugs settle that? |
Quick question about diet. My dog is not interested in doggie treats from the shop. The meaty tasting chewy stuff. What I found is that she love bits of boiled egg. Are boiled eggs OK for a yorkie. I was thinking of giving her one for breakfast as we are cooking them anyway. |
