Reaction to 2nd shots/deworming Gracie had her second round of puppy shots and deworming yesterday at 10 weeks of age. She was premedicated with 1/2 cc Benedryl prior to. Afterwards she was as normal for up to 2 hours or so then became very restless and vocal. This amped up more and continued the rest of the day until around 8pm. She did not sleep during that time, did not want to be held.. was virtually inconsolable. Around 8pm she went into her kennel as usual for that time. She did sleep but woke up very frequently to go out to potty (which is understandable). This morning she is back to normal up at 8:30 on her normal schedule. Spoke to the vet this morning just to be sure nothing is abnormal. They feel that it was a reaction to the shots and that the 1/2 cc Benedryl probably prevented an even worse reaction. They indicate that the vet may up the dosage in a few weeks when she has her 3rd round. Wow.. my heart was breaking for her. We had such a rough day/night. She's so tiny and it just makes you feel helpless. I am so thankful she is back to herself and calm now. Just sharing in case anyone else experiences this. |
I'm so sorry Gracie had this happen to her.......It looks like she had her first vaccine a bit too young for her to have had a second round at 10 weeks. To administer a vaccine safely to a pup a vaccine should be administered with nothing else at the same time, no deworming, no heartworm or flea stuff. The body is trying to already process the vaccine and anything else interfering with this process just add more stress to the body. Vaccines are typically administered 4 weeks apart from each other. It's not the number of vaccines administered it's when. They typically do three to ensure the vaccine produced antibodies w/o being interfered with by mom's maternal antibodies. If your concerned with the pup having a reaction to the next vaccine you could always have a titer done to see if antibodies sre present. If there are then she's protected. A lot of people like DR. J. Dodds schedule for vaccines it's a minimal approach....You can print this out and keep it for reference... Vaccination Schedule Recommendations For Dogs These are wonderful site to read about vaccines and our pups.... Truth4Dogs Top Natural Holistic Dog Health Care Book: Multiple Award Winner You'll find some great advise on these sites..:) |
Also I just wanted to say if the vet is using a combo vaccine, as in a 5 way, Dr. Dodds and Dr. Schultz (vaccine researchers) don't recommend them or like them. The vet should be using a 3 way at the most. The 5 way has some components in them such as lepto which can cause reactions. One of the problems with these types of vaccines is they have so many antigens in them you will never know which one caused the reaction. So it's best for the pup to administer as few as p[possible at once. The smaller the dog the more likely a reaction can happen. These statements are from reliable sources..... It is commonly held that puppies need a certain number of vaccines for protection to be achieved (usually either 3 or 4 is the “magic” number). The number of vaccines given has nothing to do with protection. In order for protection to be achieved, vaccine must be given when it can penetrate maternal antibody. " (American Animal Hospital Association) Giving combo vaccines (multi-valiant, polyvalent) and/or several shots at once increases the risk of adverse reactions as well as the risk that the vaccines will interfere with each other, resulting in neutralization or negation. (American Animal Hospital Association) Sorry so long...:) |
The 5 way does not have lepto in it. I tend to hold off giving my pubs their first shot. I want to make sure the vaccine takes. Studies show that the older the pup is, the greater the chances are that it provoked the proper immune response. At 20 weeks the chance of provoking the immune system is near 100percent. The OP's pup will likely need a 4th vaccine or else delay the 3rd one to be confident of protection. 14 weeks is too early to be finished with puppy vaccinations. |

The only reason I suggest a three way is to cut down on a pups exposure to unnecessary antigens. According to the OP this pup in particular has had a reaction. Once a pup has a reaction the chance of another reaction is increased for the next one vaccine. The three way I was thinking of is the Nobivac Puppy DPV which contains distemper and parvo. These are the core vaccines that Dr. Dodds recommends she doesn't consider hepatitis as a core vaccine. If I had a pup that suffered a vaccine reaction I would want to be as careful as possible from here on out as to the amount of vaccines it's exposed to. |

If the OP did opt for just the DP vaccine, she would need to let her vet know in advance as they may not keep it on hand. |
Really appreciate everyone taking the time to respond to this matter. Today Gracie has been perfectly normal except for the fact that she threw up once when she went outside to potty. She didn't act or seem sick.. she just upchucked. I am really concerned about all this now. Don't want her to go through this again. She was born 11/15/13. She received her initial puppy shots on 1/1/14(just at 7 weeks). Then her second round yesterday on 1/24/14 at 10 weeks old. Vet has her scheduled for her next round on 2/11 which will put her just over 12 weeks old. Arghhh |
I was, and still am having the same concerns as you. I took my Izzy in for her second round of shots Thursday and she received the 5 way and within 30 minutes she started puking until there wasn't anything else to puke and just look horrible and very lethargic. I took her immediately to a differents vets office because the one she got her shots from said they couldn't get her in until a little later and I was PO'd and the vets office I took her too gave her a shot of Benedryl. and said that the first round of shots she was given at 7 weeks by the breeder were to early to do anything and that they don't recommend the 5 way the only do the 2 way and seemed to go more towards Dr. Dodd. I was really torn when deciding what shot place to go to her locally because they both do totally different things besides the differences in shots one deworms and the other one doesn't unless needed. I wish I would have went with my gut in the first place, I was worried about the cost and then ended up paying double anyway for two office visits, shots at one and then shot of benddryl at the other. I sounds like your little had similar problems. Izzy has been fine today and yesterday so I think she is on the mend. Hope you little one is on the mend as well. |

There is nothing we could have done to control when the breeder had the first shots administered. The day we found her and brought her home was her 8 week birthday so what was done was done. We have gone to our vet for a long time and I trust them. I am going to talk to them before this next appointment and get clear on the fact that this has to be done differently as she really need not go through that again. It was horrible for both of us. There is no need to see our babies in that distress when it can be avoided. These babies are just so tiny that much has to be considered for sure. |
Looking at Gracie's shot record it shows: 1st shots: Nobivac 1-DAPPv Canine Dsitemper Adenovirus Type 2 Parainfluenza Parvovirus Vaccine 2nd shots: Distemper, Adenovirus, Parainfluenza, Parvovirus |
