Does your Yorkie tear a lot? Matthias seems to have a lot of 'tearing' from his eyes. He doesn't seem to be in pain or anything but I'm constantly cleaning off his little face from that black "eye booger" stuff that all dogs tend to get, but Matthias gets more often. One of my sisters is a vet tech and told me that he would need a nasalflush operation and that it is common with small breed dogs. Have any of you experienced this? |
My baby tears a lot and it even gets stinky at times (yuck) but i was just told to clean it with a warm cloth daily. Also i read on this forum that it could be caused by the food the dog is eating. If it contains red beets supposedly this makes it worse. Just a little insight. |
Hmmm... right now he's on Iams puppy food. All the animals eat Iams. I was thinking of switching to Chicken Soup after reading how great it was. I think once this bag of Iams is near the end, I'll work on the slow switch. God willing that will take care of it. My sister did tell me I can put Visine in his eyes to help with any discomfort if he seemed to have that. but he doesn't and I wouldn't put anything in his eyes without my vet's expressed approval. hehehe thanks for the insight. |
Our little Tiffany (now at the bridge) use to tear quite a bit, We always blamed it on her allergies. did find eye drops that seem to help,talk to your vet. |
Also, the hair at the inside corners of the eyes and just below should not be poking him in the eyes. This can also cause tearing. |
Magic sometimes tears alot, I am not sure of the cause but we just try and wash her face to get them off!! It doesn't seem to cause her any pain so we haven't really looked into anymore. |
Bridget, when you get the dentals and neutering done, ask the vet to do a naso-lacrimal duct flush. There is a way to find out if the ducts are clogged or not formed. The vet can put an orange dye in the eye very carefully so as not to let any get on the face. Then wipe eye with wet cotton ball. Turn off lights in roon and use a special blue light shining up the nose. If there is a flow from the dye in the NOSE the ducts are open and it could be something else like allergies or hair in the eyes that need to be trimmed back. If it does not filter from the eye into those ducts, they are not open and the vet can try the flush to see if the problem disappears. Your sister is right. It does happen in a large number of toy breeds-Maltese, Poodles and white dogs really show it by the discoloration on their faces.. Let me know what he finds.. |
