For those who take their dog everywhere...
 

I would love to take Winston more places. Right now, the only time he goes on field trips is to a friends house or the pet store. The weather is definitely a challenge, If I have to go somewhere that doesn't allow dogs, I can only be gone 10 mins or less ( the amount of time my automatic start will run before it shuts off) or he has to stay home. What kind of places do you bring your dogs? What carrier do you use? Has your dog always been calm enough to go unnoticed in public or did this come with age? Winston is such a spaz, I can totally see him barking and blowing my cover, but hes still only 4.5 months old. The carrier I use right now is the Top Paw comfort carreir (Top Paw™ Small Comfort Pet Carrier - Tan). He pretty much hates it, instead of popping his head out of the little door, he just climbs out. I'd love any suggestions!

Treats for staying in the carrier? and for being quiet? pups have lots of energy, maybe a long walk before being placed in the carrier?:confused:

I think it really depends on how pet friendly your area is. My location have become a lot more pet friendly in the past few years but I still can't see myself taking my little two anywhere except pet stores and perhaps certain restaurants that have patio sitting that allows dogs. I only did that twice with Magnus when he was a 1-2 years old. He's usually bit rowdy but both those times, he actually behaved himself very well.

My area is pretty pet friendly when the weather allows. There is a couple outdoor malls that are pet friendly near me. Most of the stores let you bring your dog in, We will definitely frequent those once its warmer. Its -20 today so anything outdoors is out of the question.

I used to take prince everywhere with me. He rode around in his doggie purse, undercover of course. He's quiet and he would just lay down in his carrier. Ricky on the other hand tries to climb out of the purse.

Now that I have 2, I've invested in a stroller. I can't take it into a grocery store or inside a restaurant but I do take it most other places I want to go, like the mall...or to public events. I've taken them to craft shows, parades and events downtown. I feel better about taking them in there because they have more room too. I always felt guilty leaving Prince in my purse too long. He tolerates it, but he'd rather not be in there.


I know some people on YT have dogs that love their purses and will try to climb into any purse they see because they know it means they are going out...and there are dogs that love their strollers as well. I am not that fortunate...but I think it's because I got both of my dogs as adults. You are fortunate enough to have a young puppy that you can train. If your dog likes going on outings and knows that she has to get in her purse or stroller to go out, she will probably come to love it. Neither of my dogs were socialized on outings so it's more stressful than it is fun to go out. They are the only dogs I've owned that don't get excited to go on car rides!! LOL!!

I started taking Lola out a few times a week as soon as I got her. She's always been very good in stores and isn't much of a barker anyway.

A lot of stores let me carry her in my arm but I also have a stroller and a purse. I had a cheap purse from petco that she hated, now I have a jaraden soho and she loves it.
She rode in it one time, did very well, and the next day I had it on the floor showing someone and she climbed in. She never climbed in the other bag.

Dollar Store
Insurance Office
etc etc.
She is so darn cute she just gets away with it.

No carriers if they kick us out they do otherwise she is just in my arms.

P.S. Only place we were told to leave was in Mennards in the U.S. First girl let us in but then I encountered an older lady who obviously did not like dogs.

One Mean store who denied us entry was CVS in Oakland Ca on Fruitvale Street.

She has a rely nice carrier but I usually have her in my arms and she's soooo nosy😉

I usually just take them to places that allow dogs, but on vacations I've successfully taken them elsewhere in a backpack carrier. The attached is similar to what I use. It's a carrier, a backpack, a car seat and an airline approved carrier/suitcase. I find when it's high on my back the dogs aren't tempted to try to get out when the zipper's open. Besides, they can be clipped in.

I talk to them a lot while they're in there and offer treats to try to make it more fun.

Generally, though, I find they don't like being carted around for long periods, so I often just leave them home.

I take mine pretty much anywhere and they even usually go in Target and places like that. Mine have always been really great and quiet in their carrier so I have never had anyone even really notice that they were with me. Mine love to go out!

Callie is to big to sneak in places so we just go to A LOT of pet events like expos and stuff. It's really not safe to leave him in the car even if it's on because people will break in and steal him especially if they see it's a yorkie puppy.

We were suffering cabin fever, so we took the boys to Lowe's Home Improvement to walk around.

Priscilla does fine in stores, as long as she isn't kept still. I was standing in line last week in a store and she started growling , so I started rocking back and forth on my heels. The lady behind me told me if I had to use the restroom she would hold my place in line :P

Jackson is 17lbs so I won't be carrying him anywhere :yelrotflm BUT he loves coming with me wherever he can. He comes to the bank (and gets a biscuit through the drive-thru), and certain stores around here allow dogs (there's a nice garden-center type place that allows dogs to walk in, and it's gorgeous there at Christmas time), Home Depot or Lowes...

Ummm, I've never heard anyone say anything to me when I've had him with me to get my car fixed or oil change, etc. He will come into the lobby with me to pay. Oh, the local car wash is very dog friendly. They're allowed inside and even get a biscuit at the register while you're waiting for your car. Most stores in Downtown Annapolis allow dogs on leash, even some clothing stores.

We take him on vacation with us to certain places- i.e. Gettysburg is very dog friendly. The obvious pet stores of course. I may be missing some.

I take Gracie to any stores that allows dogs, here in Texas its way to hot to leave her in the car most of the year. She loves car rides, we have taken her to Chicago twice in the car and when we flew, she did great both trips. When we ask if we could bring her into stores she is so cute we get away with having her with us, and she behaves when she is held. We are looking to get her a car booster seat any suggestions. :aimeeyork

I take Gracie absolutely everywhere with me. She gets in her carrier with her snuggie blanket and toy and I always say "snuggle down". She never makes a peep. She is actually a psychiatric service dog legitimately by description so she is allowed to go everywhere but this is a new experience for me so I am always amazed that she can go undetected.

She is so good. I absolutely believe in the process of training your own PSD and getting them as a puppy. They bond to you and you to them and it makes for such a wonderful process.

This is the first time in my life I have had a new puppy. It is an amazing and wonderful experience.

This all came about through therapy after a series of major life transitions that changed life forever: losing my father, mother going into asst living, husband going through two major layoffs, breaking a leg/hand and misc other body damage.......

I found out there are times when a psychologist is wonderful if it is a good one. Mine feels that the PSD is just "what the doctor ordered" and she definitely is effecting mine and DH life that way individually and together. She's truly an angel and we are so thankful.

Where have you guys found the best carriers? I looked at the jaraden carriers, and while they look very nice, they're so expensive! Id like something where he can poke his head out but can't get his whole body out. I liked that the jaraden soho had a opening at the top of the bag, i dont think he could get himself out at that angle.

I don't know how relevant my experience will be, different country, but for what it's worth here's what I find. I try to take mine everywhere & mostly find I can get away with it, especially in holiday areas more than near home.
No chance in supermarkets or most food shops but most other shops, even with the sign "no dogs except for guide dogs" on the door are more than willing to let such small dogs in if you pick them up to carry them in & immediately ask if they mind me bringing in if I carry them. The usual response is either, " not at all, do come in" or" yes, please come in, you can put them down, no need to carry them." I find carrying them rather than using a pet carrier gets a more positive response
Banks, the Post Office etc, don't even need to ask.

I have the Jaraden soho bag. I love it. It is well worth the price. I use it as a purse too. Maximo (Kristin) sells them. I let Galen's head to be out. There us a tether in it to hold him in. He can pop out of the hole if not tethered lol I have taken him to Homegoods, TJ Maxx , pet and gardening stores.

Did anyone know that TJ Maxx, Homegoods, and Hobby Lobby are all three pet friendly? I didn't know this until last week

I've taken my dogs to TJMaxx. It's always been in a stroller though and I never asked. I have an outdoor shopping center near me and I take the boys shopping there. We've been into Old Navy, TJMaxx, Pier One, Famous Footwear, Michaels and Jo-Ann Fabrics in that plaza.

When I was in TJMaxx, I did take Prince out of his stroller to try on some clothes they sell there. Nobody said a thing. I just thought the workers were being nice...didn't realize they were actually pet friendly.

I take Mickey EVERYWHERE.! I wouldn't take my babies to the salon though. I think that smell wouldn't be a great idea for their respiratory system. I could be over cautious. Id rather be on the safe side.! I have a stroller, which surprisingly I don't use often. Unless I know there will be lots of walking around. It does take up space in my trunk that may be needed for other things at times. I purchased my carriers from Aymee, (Yorkie2Happiness) on etsy. BEST carriers I have seen thus far.! I also have a few carriers I purchased at my local pet store. I think one brand is Anima. Actually my favorite besides my custom carriers from (Y2H). I take my baby everywhere & will continue to do so even with Minnie. I have yet had anyone tell me otherwise. I have started Mickey off in a carrier since I got him. When appropriate I typically just carry him. When I am unable, He just sleeps in his carrier most other times.
