*** NEWBIE *** Female Yorkie Owner Greetings! I decided joined today after adopting a 10 week old Female Yorkie Pup. All our prior dogs have been Jack Russells and Poodle-Shihzu Hybrids, so this is our first Yorkie. We have so many questions. Even at her young age, Coco, named after Coco Chanel, because she has a very lady-like manner and always smells sooo goo. She's very different from our other dogs. The first and foremost thing we notice is her intelligence at so young an age. The only challenge we have had has been potting training, especially the first week, which I had read was common. Anyway, I wanted to inquire about your experiences and tips & tricks with keeping her eyes and ears clean. Our vet recommended only bottled, filtered water instead of tap or even from the fridge. She says that our water is unusually hard and sometimes the high calcium content of hard water may cause more tearing up than if she drinks filtered water. Any tips and tricks for a newbie Yorkie owner are much appreciated. Such as how often to bathe? Safest way to clip nails, flea and tick prevention. Thank you! Respectfully, Onyok |
Hi and WELCOME to YT - so glad you found us!!! Your kiddo sounds like a smart little lady, and has such a great namesake. Now, she just needs her own Chanel pet carrier! I use bottled water for my furs too, and I do think it keeps their eyes clearer. I don't need to clean my kiddos' ears bc they just don't ever need it, but I know some people here do need to use ear cleaners. Some people also pluck the ear hairs, but I don't do that either. I try to bathe them about every couple weeks. I don't use flea/tick prevention here in AZ bc it's not as much of a problem. For clipping nails, I always hold them in my arms while my hubby clips. Can't wait to hear more about your Coco - and to see a piccie! |
Hi and welcome to YT. Bottled water really is the best for tear stains. I like Ann have been fortunate with Kyra and Laddy and ears they never require cleaning just a wipe at bath time. Lolita (RIP sweet girl) was different and needed ear cleaning so once a week at bath time I would put ear cleaner in her ears and swab them. Just a side note it worked better that way because the cleaner once it gets in their fir is hard to get out without a bath. |
