Had a bizaar scare So my yorkie coco la rue wears a rabies tag issued by the state. It came with a very thin coiled wire that attaches to the tag to the collar. Anyway, while I was sleeping with her in my bed she was sleeping in her usually spot which is on the side edge of the bed. I woke up to find her yelping and her hanging with feet over the bed. I went to lift her up so she wouldn't completing fall and discovered she was stuck! Her tags wire had punctured my mattress , gotten snagged causing her to be in danger of hanging. I couldn't believe how embedded the wire was into my pillow top bed. I had to rip the pillow top in my panic to undo her. I can't imagine what would of happened had this occurred while I was away. I feel awful I didn't put on a sturdier metal attachment. My baby could have been taken from me over something so preventable as I had it on my list to replace it. She is fine by the way thank goodness. If any of you has one of these thin wire attachments replace it with something sturdier. |
What a horrible way to wake up! I'm so glad you were there! |
Re :scare Me too! |
What a SCARE that was for you! My babies wear a collar with their rabies tag on it BUT ONLY when we go out not in public or from the house the house. They sleep in crates too so I don't have too much to worry about. BTW they love their crates, to them it is their happy zone not a punishment as some might think |
Oh no so sorry that happened. That is one of the reasons why mine don't wear collars and tag's when home. I only put them on if we were are going out. I had a friend whose dog hung himself by his collar while she was at work. |
Thank you for sharing this awful near-tragedy - it might save someone's Yorkie who has the same tag attachment! I'm so glad you were there when this happened and could save her life! There are so many ways these tiny little dogs can get into bad trouble. I'm hoping you are over your big scare and you all have a thoroughly quiet life from now on. |
Your poor friend must have been devastated. I do crate coco la rue but not at night as she has severe separation anxiety from being flipped a few times on c. L. I have her chipped but I've had so many clients lose their dogs because tags and collar were off and people use it as a excuse not to find a lost dogs real owner . I will be taking of her collar at night from now on. |
What a terrible fright both you and your baby must have had. I am so glad that you were there with her, thank goodness. I always put them/tags on a sturdy key rings and not those tiny little ones that come with the rabies either. I know that you were in the moment and of course helping your baby was your first response but for anyone else who might end up in the same scary predicament: Unsnap the collar instead of ripping a hole in the mattress !! :) |
Sorry about your scary situation. I use a kitty collar on Lexi and hopefully, it would release if that happened to her. I only put an id tag on Lexi, not her rabies tag and license tag and AKC tag. If she had all those on, she wouldn't be able to hold her head up. Or she'd have the strongest neck ever!:aimeeyork |

I personally know at least 3 dogs and a horse, that have hung themselves from collars and the horse was put out to pasture with a halter on.....I always caution my owners about putting collars on their dogs, laden with tags. If you insist on a collar, a break away cat collar for the tags would be the only safe option....and tags attached to their harness is a much preferable option.... |

Wow that's scary! My cousin's medium sized dog recently fell down a few steps because his front paw got caught in his collar. He didn't get hurt but it really upset him. My cousin had put it on him a little loose so he wouldn't hang himself and so it wouldn't mat his hair. |
Glad she's ok. Collars scare me. |
how scary, I don't bother keeping the rabies tag on Lola, to many tags jingle and make noise and tangle up her hair. Our cat died from it's collar. Mittens would go outside during the day and after he started hunting birds my mom decided to get a collar with a bell so the birds would hear him coming. I guess he did not like the collar, my neighbor found him dead in her backyard, he had one if his teeth caught in the collar, he must have been trying to bite it off. We all very devastated and as a result of that we never got another pet, my mom said she could not take the heartbreak again:( |
I think maybe switching to tags on a harness might be a safer compromise for me . Since I don\'t let her out unattended away. Too many owls and raptors and nutria. |
