What do you do during walks? I have been walking as much as possible. Most of the time I put Rosie and Mikki in the stroller. Other times I put their harnesses on and take off with leash in hand. This has gone great until we had a problem today. As we were walking, Rosie kept stopping and refusing to go. I finally just picked her up and carried her while Mikki walked. When we got home, I took off her harness and started to brush her. I went to brush her underneath and I felt her paw. She had a sticker in her paw. :(. I got it out but she let out a yelp. So my question is, for you who go on walks, do you use the dog shoes? Would they keep stickers out? Didn't like my baby being hurt. :( |
Poor Rosie! Max cracked a paw pad once, but other than that, we haven't had any paw problems. Amazing considering we often run into prickly sweet gum tree seed balls. Although we walk mostly on pavement, the boys still manage to pick up prickly sticks in their undercarriage. Max sat down in the middle of the street once and I found a rose bush branch with thorns stuck to him. Teddy had thistle between his legs. |

Was the sticker in Rosie's pad or the flesh color part between the pads? Are her pads soft? If her pads are too soft (not roughed up enough), she may be more susceptible to injury. Gail taught me that -- that it isn't good to use pad softeners. |
Stinker as in those kids use to put on things like notebook and stuff? The only issue I had was with Zoey. When I first started walking her as a puppy, her paw pads got scruffed up to the point where it was leaving small blood tracks on the kitchen floor when we came back. :( I made a home made booties which worked pretty well. But then I started using musher's secret and walked her less. Which is why I bought the backpack to carry her. After several months, I think her pads got harden(?) enough and now doesn't scruff. :D But she still wants to be carried most of the walks. LOL |

They may get used to them Cedric will wear them to play in the snow. I think they are good protection from ground yuck. lol Glad Rosie is ok.... |
I bring a brush with me to get them out of Cookie's paws and legs on our walks. |
I've thankfully never had a dog get a sticker but I guess all you can do is watch for limping or hesitation to walk - usually an immediate dead give-away there's a problem with the dog. Usually when a dog out for a walk starts to try to sit or slow way down or limp, there is a problem of some sort. From now on, I guess all you can do is try to watch out for patches of stickers. Hopefully little Rosie won't get any more of those nasty old things in her paw! |
after learning a lesson when Lola wound up covered with about 30 little black prickers the size of a caraway seeds we are more careful now. Around here the fall is the worst time so we make sure to stay on sidewalks and I don't let her go off to sniff in areas where there are bushes. Even if she had shoes on the stickers got all over her legs and under her tummy. Also as soon as she might start acting weird, like a paw up or not wanting to walk I lift her up and look underneath to see if she go into something. |
I usually take mine to walk on the roads or sidewalks when available but lately we haven't been out. They have mostly just been in the yard to play because of the amount of snow we have had. If you do take your pups out to walk be sure to wash their feet when you come in the salt from the sidewalks and roads can damage the paws. |

Max is much easier. When he sits and gets a worried look on his face, I always know he has something stuck underneath him. For other things, he always shows me or points me to it. |
