Picky eater Hello everyone. I have a problem. My 7 month old Yorkie is a very picky eater. I have tried what seems to me all brands of wet and dry food. Jax will snub and walk away. I've spoken to his vet about it and was told to leave the food out. If Jax is hungry, he'll eat it. Jax prefers to starve than to eat dog food. The only thing he really likes is human food. Real chicken and steak. I've tried some veggies too. However, Jax isn't crazy over veggies. I'm currently giving him Nutrical (I hope I didn't misspell it) this vitamin isn't really giving him an appetite either. HELP! I'm running out of foods to give him. |

This can be a real tough one for many people. So sorry you're going through it. Keep trying new foods, if any are left. But also, have you tried sprinkling Parmesan cheese on his food - it's nice and pungent and enticing...dogs eat first w/ their noses, so this often helps. You can also try sprinkling some chicken broth or beef broth on the food. |

I know what you're going through believe me I do. We have 5 little dogs that are picky. We've tried everything on the shelves. We give our dogs chicken and peas, they like this. My vet says to leave the food out, if they're hungry they will eat it. Dogs don't starve themselves unles they are sick Right now we are into dehydrating chicken for them. They love that. |
We went through much the same thing with Gracie. I do not support the theory that if a dog is hungry enough it will eat. The first months of life are when healthy bones and organs are formed. Good nutrition is important. We also tried several brands of kibble and canned food. The truth of it was she seemed almost repulsed by the stuff. After finally starting to read the actual ingredient lists and not just the company's empty promises I started to understand why. For a while I prepared her meals myself and then we decided to go with a commercial raw dog food. She loves it and has done very well on it for over 2 years. Sometimes I will make a few homemade meals for her. Either way it is better than the low quality stuff I was trying to force her to eat before. The pet food industry is not always what it appears. It is self regulated, meaning they do not have any standards to uphold. Be very careful when choosing a brand for your pup. Do some investigation. Even the labeling on pet food is allowed to be very misleading. |
I feed Gizmo a mixture of royal canine yorkie kibble and the commercial raw diet mixed, he too loves the raw and gobbles it up. I also use a puzzle toy and put frozen veggies in it, and he will bring it back for a refill if he can get one :-) he doesn't really like fresh veggies, but loves them frozen, with the exception on lettuce lol. He loves when you are making a salad and will beg the whole time for lettuce? Very strange one I have here lol. |

Hi!! Thanks for the note. How do you dehydrate the chicken for them? I read online pet chef express food and Maverick. I bought the Maverick and much to my surprise, Jax ate all his dry food!! I pushed my luck after he ate the little bit of kibbles I'd served him and served him so wet food. He ate all of it too!! I am O V E R J O Y E D!!! |
my lallas seems scared to eat! I'm having a terrible time trying to get my 14 month old yorkie to eat! I got her when she was 4 months,she was basically anarexic and sick! and she used to love the royal canin puppie food, but now she refuses, she doesn't even like chicken and rice, even made homemade dog food, she runs away and hides outside, I give her nutristim but she doesn't get hungry! The vet says to try different foods, but I have tried all the good qaulity food already, she is so thin and I'm seriously concerned now, she is my baby. :( |

Oh the dehydrated food . . . Primal is one brand. Great rated. A few of our members feed it. |
