My morkie puppy..tail docked too short? Hi I am new to yorkietalk. My morkie is my first pet. She is adorable and we love her. She is now 14 weeks and weighs about 3 1/2 pounds. Her docked tail seems very short. It's only about 1 inch. Will it grow a little longer as she gets older? I was hoping around 2 inches. Right now it looks like she doesn't have a tail. |
I have a Morkie and wish I could help you but Amy's tail was not docked. Hoping you find the answer to your question. |
Welcome. Once the tail is docked it doesn't grow any. |
I agree with Patti that the tail won't grow any longer. But maybe the hair on the end tail will grow out some. My Tibbe has about a 1 1/2 - 2" tail but the hair on the end of it grows out stiffish and stands up on the end, always making it look longer. As I like a very short tail, I keep it cut back short on the end but before I know it, the hair has grown out stiff again and makes his tail look considerably longer when I haven't trimmed it for a while. Hopefully yours will grow out stiffish in time and add some length to the appearance of it. |
I agree. Sadly, the tail will not grow. The Yorkie standard calls for a medium size tail. Some breeders and even vets have no idea how to properly dock the Yorkie tail. It is now considered cruel and made illegal to dock dog tails in the EU mainly due to the fact that there was so many people docking improperly. It is becoming controversial in this country. |
I don't know what the "official" tail length is, but their tail hair does grow out and makes the tail look longer. If you look at pictures on the net you'll see all different lengths. |
Sorry the tail will not grow. You can grow out her tail, it will look longer |
Nope, the tail won't grow. However, if you let the hair on the tail grow out it will make her look as though she has a longer tail. I keep Blazer's tail hair long and he holds it up and proud and waves it like a flag. I love it! |
Thank you. The vet told me as she gets bigger (8 lbs estimated weight) all the bones in her body will grow a little including her tail. I now see more hair/fur strands starting to grow on her tail. Hopefully she will have something that looks like a tail in the future. |
I was under the impression that the tail grows just like the rest of the body grows, but it will always be the same size relative to the rest of the body, if it's too short now, it will still look too short when your dog is full grown. One of the reasons I don't support mix breeders even though the dog's are precious, is that they are breeding for the wrong reasons and don't know what they are doing. Cutting the tail too short means this person didn't study about the procedure and that worries me. That said many here have morkies and they are really adorable. |
My Morkie, Toby, came to us at ten weeks and two pounds and had an itty bitty tail--it never looked too short, but it looked small…probably because his fur (hair) was so short then. Now he is fluffier because he has his adult fur--he is a year old and six pounds. His tail is adorable and just right for his size. |
