First HEAT! (Please read and reply)
 
Yesterday night, as I am examining my baby I notice some changes around her nipples and the size of her vagina. She is now in heat. I've never had a puppy in heat. I'm so new to this, so if you know of any sites that sells dog pampers and stuff... please reply below. Also any tips will help.


Oh. And one more thing... I have a 5 years old Maltese who isn't neutered. :( So, I now lock Cupcake away if I have to leave my home. Strange dogs have been wondering around. WTH!

I think the greatest challenge for you will be keeping your male Maltese away from Cupcake. Even if you're supervising them, he might manage to sneak in while your back is turned, or even while it isn't. You might consider having your Maltese neutered ASAP, and/or have Cupcake neutered after her heat cycle is over. If neither is possible, you will have to keep them physically separated at all times. If Cupcake gets pregnant, you still have the option of getting an emergency spay, but it's riskier than having her spayed between heat cycles.

We got our underwear for jasmin from petsmart along with doggie panty liners. We went through 4 boxes before her heat cycle was over. Jasmin got spayed after her first heat cycle which we are glad we did.

My female bulldog just went through her third heat cycle(with an intact male in the home) so I know how stressful it can be for you. My best advice would be to keep Cupcake completely separated from other dogs(male AND female) if at all possible but especially males. Keep her in a separate room I wouldn't really trust crates being a deterrent by themselves, get diapers/panty liners for her so she won't get blood on your furniture/carpet. Heat cycles last around 3 weeks but I think they can only get pregnant 7 days out of the 21. In my case I just kept my dogs (who are both intact) seperated for 3.5 weeks just to be safe. They were not allowed near each other at any time

I used cloth diapers from petsmart and very small and thin human panty liners, the ones I had were walmart's brand.

She didn't bleed too badly so we just covered the furniture with blankets, she only wore the diapers outside the house (I took her to visit people who don't have pets).

Dogs can breed through a fence, a baby gate, a crate and can rip a doggy diaper or belly band off to get to each other.

Your only way of knowing she won't get pregnant is not allowing them anywhere near each other. Males have been known to chew through doors and walls to get to a female in heat!! And it truly takes a few seconds for them to tie and a pregnancy result-I have puppies to prove this!

I've been thinking about getting my male dog fixed but I haven't gotten around to it yet. As of now, my male dog doesn't seem to interested in my female dog but I do keep them apart.

Thank you so much for the panty liner idea. :) I'll be sure to buy some pads/liners for my baby today. She's wearing baby pampers at the moment.

I put her in a seperate door and the door is locked. 3 weeks doesn't sound too bad. She won't be around my male pooch after this month so I think I'll be OK. Well... I hope. Lol

How big are you babies? My male dog is about 6-7 pounds. I kinda' doubt he can chew through walls (as a larger dog can). Well, I really don't know, but I lock her in a locked room and him in a large cage (when I am not at home). I know animals will do crazy things to mate so I'll be sure to keep a keen eye. Thank you! :)

Cupcake doesn't bleed a lot. I honestly wouldn't even had notice if I didn't check her. I'll be sure to buy panty liners and thin pads. Thank you! You ladies are the best. :)

Just know the diapers will not keep them from mating and all it takes is a second and wham its happened. Maybe this would be a great time to get your guy neutered. Also do not leave her outside alone.
