Gizmo tried to lift his leg to pee on pad and missed :-( So I'm wondering if anyone has had a male pup, who all of a sudden decided to try to lift their leg from the wood floors and aim for the pad, only to miss ? He's always been really good inside and squats to pee on his pad. When he goes on walks he lifts his leg to pee. He's never gotten the 2 confused until today. I watched as he walked across the hard wood floor over to the pad, but instead of going onto the pad he got right next to it and lifted his leg, only to miss and leave a puddle on the floor :-( I just got him fixed 2 weeks ago and wonder if his hormones are still off ad e got a bit confused? He has never lifted his leg in the house. Has anyone else had this happen, and if so how did you correct it? He has since went back and peed on his pad, after I told him only potty on the pad. He does understand the command of go potty on the pad, and then I reward him after he goes. Obviously though he got no reward of a treat with the puddle on the floor lol, all he got was a reprimand. Since he's used it since properly, and gotten rewarded, I am hoping it was a one time thing :-( |
Aww poor little guy. I have a girl. Maybe someone can give you some tips. |
1 Attachment(s) Gizmo gets a 'A' for effort!:D Turbo never lifted his leg, but learned from Momo. Turbo used to lift his leg so high & press himself against the wall (maybe for balance:confused:) & pee...a lot! The wall, the baseboard, the floor, under the pee pad got all wet. A member here (carlybaby) had posted a pic of a glass jar in the middle of the pee pad. Genius! Here's our set up, the boys use the water bottle was a marker. I cut the pee pad & wrap it around, prop it against the wall, it holds up the pee pad too. I have 3-4 bottles propped up in both baths & the boys use it every time, no accidents, but they're older 5-6 years old. We use washables & I line the paper pee pad underneath for xtra protection. I give them bottled water, so I recycle it, change it every week. Attachment 395681 |
Another thing, their designated pee area are in the bathrooms. I had to make the pee area bigger. If I only put down 1 pad, more potty mistakes happened, like peeing on the edge. |
1 Attachment(s) Huey seemed to always want to pee on the same spot on the bathroom door jamb, so this is what I came up with. He hits it evey time! I have a piece of 2 sided tape on the jamb thst I stick the upper part of the pad to. |
Well it must have been a one time thing so far at least haha, he's went pee about 5 or 6 times on the pad since, and gotten his little treat pieces :-) Yea if I put down a water bottle he would just chew it flat hehehe, he's already figured out how to get them out of the water bottle toys, and then gnaws on them till they are completely flat lol. |
I would have never thought of those suggestions--what great ideas. My boy lifts his leg (inappropriately at times)...and--being a tiny bit bow-legged--he occasionally topples over. lol We (probably wrongly) give credit in the house for effort. It's just too hard to be stern with a yorkie face looking back at you. And I have no idea how to help my boy with his aim, but I'm going to try the vertical target ideas! |
I have been thinking about this thread. At first I thought the "target" idea was great but the more I thought about it I am wondering if giving the dog a target is teaching him to lift his leg in the house? |

It's so much simpler with girls - they always squat. Lol |

As I wrote about girls always squatting I recalled my female Gina always lifted her leg on walks. This was amazing to me. She was not a dominate girl at all so the leg lift was surprising. But being a female she could not squirt high on anything like boys can. |
when I had a paper trained male I used a large flat dog litter box that he had to get in to go, so that helped with misses on the floor. The only thing that drove me nuts is the dribble afterwards, I had to put a plastic mat on the floor in front of the box, I was always wiping it up because of the yellow stains. Does the dribble after the fact drive you nuts? |
