Australian terrier???? Hey everyone, I posted nearly a year ago about my dog ruby whether or not if she was a yorkie, I'm still on clear as to what she is really haha I've since came across the Australian terrier and I have to say she is very similar to this breed and think that maybe she is one. Dods anyone on here have knowledge of Australian terriers? I will post a recent pic as soon as I can..... |
I don't know about that breed but we have a dog whom we got and did not know the breed of. I was really interested because if you asked 10 different people what they thought she was you would get 10 different answers. You might want to do it and see what it says :) |
Isn't an Australian terrier just another name for silkie? |

An Australian Terrier, Silky Terrier (sometimes known as Australian Silky Terrier), and the Yorkshire Terrier. A Silky was created by mixing the Australian and the Yorkie. The Aussie is the most "Terrier" of the 3 by far. In fact, they are in the Terrier group and not the toy group. They also have rough hair (wired) and don't get shaved like a Yorkie or Silky would, rather hand-stripped. I spoke to a few breeders when I looked into them a little at one point, and think they would be a little too feisty even for me. They're also prone to same sex aggression, so most breeders will NOT sell you a male if you already have a male, or vice versa. Here they are: Australian Terrier Page |
If this is her, no she does not look like an Australian Terrier at all. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/pic...ctureid=125248 Looks yorkie to me. |

One of the vets I used to work for had an australian terrier. It had a wire hair, much shorter than a yorkies....only grew a few inches, instead of down to the floor. They seem to have a much lower profile (shorter legs) than the yorkie or silky who tend to be more square. They also tend to be more stockier and heavier. Saying they are more of a terrier is an understatement. The Ausi this vet had acted more like a jack russel than it did a yorkie. It was constantly high strung. It also hated being in a cage. He would purposely wait until she got into work and put him in a cage and he would poop and smear it from ceiling to floor and wall to wall. It was everywhere and he did it on a daily basis!! Usually dogs don't want to mess where they have to lay but this one loved to play in his poop!! The pic of the pup above looks more like a yorkie to me...just my 2 cents. |

I had a friend with an Australian Terrier years ago..totally different look. Wirey hair really dose not mean much...it is the ear set and just the general look. I don't see it...but who knows. They mix everything any more. |
The aussie looks like a red legged yorkie. Any possiblility of cross breeding in the past? |
