Meeting Other People Starting a few days ago, Mork seems to have started to get nervous or frightened when we are approached by people she doesn't know (especially children). I don't know of any one hurting her. What could have caused this? How do I get her to not be frightened of people she doesn't know? |
This just happens sometimes. You could give people approaching a treat to give her and maybe that will help her learn new people are ok. Honestly it's normal for dogs to be afraid of children they can sense the energy and stuff. |
Sometimes dogs notice things that we never give a thought to. Make sure you don't force her to greet people but speak encouragingly to her when you do see people coming her way. If the person wants to interact with your dog try to have them keep their distance. No one should ever approach a strange dog without the owner's permission. Make sure she is comfortable with the encounter. Don't force her. Setting up some encounters with people you know is a good way to help her overcome her fear of meeting people during a walk. |
Thanks Lovetodream88 and gracielove! It just seems so strange! When I first got her, she wanted to meet everyone and now she is weary of everyone. She even barks at little kids. I thought that may be I should just start trying to introduce her to more new people and little kids? This way she learns to like people? Also, she seems frightened of my neighbor and she knows my neighbor. She met my neighbor the first day I brought her home. :confused: :( She does really great with other dogs though. Yesterday she met an Italian Greyhound and they were instant friends. She even laid down on her back and gave him her belly. :) |
Personally, I do not believe in forcing a fearful dog into doing something that they are not comfortable with. Setting up meetings with people you know and trust to make the experience fun for your dog may be best until your baby gets over this. Small healthy treats in the hands of the people she encounters go a long way to encourage your pet's trust. |
