Seperation Anxiety? Hey, so my 7 month old yorkie is such an attention seeker. It was cute at first but now it's not. Whenever he's left alone he barks like crazy until someone is there. As soon as someone leaves te room he starts barking an when someone enters he stops and plays. I pretty sure it's seperation anxiety. Heis barking is a problem in the early morning before school when he wakes up in his crate and no one is there, that's when he starts barkin until someone comes downstairs to tend to him. Which I don't mind waking up to do that, it's just the time he wakes up. He wakes up two-three hours even before I have to wake up for school. Like 4 in the morning! I usually stay downstairs with him until its time for school and because I lost three hours of sleep I go to school tired and usually fall asleep in biology lol. I would like to know what should I do about his seperation anxiety. I've tried doing the "ignore the first 10 minutes and the last" thing but it sure doesnt seem to work for him. My dad gets upset because he works at night so he's home with Mick during the day and my dad says when he wants to leave the room to sleep he starts barking and my dad looses sleep. What should I do? |
I think he's lonely. Can he sleep with you at night? Maybe your dad would let Mick be in his bedroom with him while he has to sleep? I know it's hard when you're tired, but keep in mind he isn't trying to be difficult. Good luck! |
How long have you been doing the 10 min ignore thing? It can take awhile for them to get used to being away from you. Is he barking that early because he needs to go outside to use the bathroom? Do you have a tshirt or towel that you've used that you would allow him to have in his crate/pen so he can smell you when you're not home? That worked for me when I had to leave home for more than an hour. The main thing is be consistent. Once you've decided on a course of action don't stop because you're not seeing results quickly he'll get the hint eventually |

As long as he's potty trained, why is he in a crate? Let him out! :) |
Hi, the way I dealt with anxiety with my dogs is walk them before I go or play with them that releases one accumulate energy then give a treat before I'm gone that way the focus I. It instead on the fact that they are alone. A tired dog would go to sleep while you are gone. If you crate your dog he gets anxiety for being there alone. I hope this helps. |
Thanks everyone ill continue the "10 minute ignore thing" and maybe put one of my old shirts near him. I don't let him out when no ones there because he chews everything! Especially his wee wee pad. Thanks for the help guys. |
Hi Everyone I'm new to YT and have the same problem with Separation Anxiety, I have a 4 month old Yorkie named Ruby, every-time I leave her in the kitchen or hallway for even a minute she will start to whine really loud, my BF is really struggling with the whining and I'm trying to do the leave her alone each day for 10mins but she seems to be getting worse, she is currently teething aswell. Any advice would be great, thanks :) |
Crying & screaming Help also! My 14 week male Yorkie is going crazy when I'm gone. First he climbed out of his pen, now in bathroom, soon to be moved to soft sided top covered play pen. I have videoed him while gone. The 10 min thing is a joke. My video is an hours worth, I'm usually home in about 2 1/2 hours. He screams and runs and jumps for the intire hour the video runs. I come home and he's still screaming. I know he hasn't slept because as soon as I let him out he goes instantly to sleep. And none of his treats have been eaten. I'm so stressed. I hate leaving him like this. What to do?? |
