'Honking' puppy Not very often-but sometimes- Kuzco makes a coughing, kind of honking sound. Just some mornings-once or twice, then that is it. He runs around a lot and has tons of energy. He is 18 weeks old. I have been pouring over articles on collapsed trachea and reverse sneezing. How worried should I be? I am awaiting a paycheck to be able to take him to the vet. |

That's one way to test it. A dog w/CT will cough when it's throat is barely touched. So it's probably reverse sneezing or something was irritating his throat. My Momo plays w/his ball all the time & I need to wash it several x's a day bc it will get dust on it along w/my long hair. One time he was making weird noises like something was stuck in his throat & I opened his mouth...my hair was in there! I pulled it out & he was fine. Another time, his poopie was stuck & I had to pull it out & my hair came out w/it!:eek: loll I am an obsessive floor cleaner now...wish I had a roomba! |
This is Momo, if you turn up the volume, you can hear him honking & snorting...reverse sneezing. He does this when he gets excited, eating or drinking too fast (which is all the time:rolleyes: loll) & if he inhaled dust or something. If it's a long one, I usu rub in-between his eyes, this makes him lower his head & he'll stop automatically. Or I gently push his nose downwards & that action helps him stop. Nope. That is not our 'noise'. I am about to try the finger touching the throat trick. There are so many things these little guys 'could' have. Maybe I'm too worried about every little thing. |
Our bella does it (honking) reverse sneezing ,,when she get excited ....never had a problem with it... |

There is a huge difference between collapsing trachea and reverse sneezing and the symptoms. The typical goose honk does not sound like reverse sneezing at all. If you ever hear a pup with a classic goose honk, you will understand what I am saying. Reverse sneeze is not honking....it is a raspy sound from air going in and out. With CT, there is not much air going in and constant coughing like a loud honk. Also, it is not true that all CT pups will cough when their trachea is stimulated/touched. Sometimes the collapse is further down, closer to the lungs. I will also add that they do not all have that goose honk. Reverse sneeze is so common. The thing to listen for is if the dog is taking air IN...typically they will breathe in and out and it is a loud raspy sound. You can see the chest expanding.... You do not see that with CT. |

My Edward has a collapsed trachea. When he has one of episodes I have him stand with his legs spaced to open the chest cavity. I encourage him to lift his head slightly by talking gently to him and very lightly pet him to calm him down. Running, barking or excitement can trigger an episode. You are doing the right thing by getting a proper diagnosis from your vet. Let us know the outcome. |
This is very interesting... the videos were good Charlie has a "cough" that he does every so often it sounds more like the reverse sneeze as far as the videos go. I have always attributed it to him trying to cough up a hair ball..... it doesnt happen very often but always like he is trying to hack something up. |
When I first rescued Gizmo at nine weeks, and for the first couple months, if he played too hard he would cough for a second. I was freaked out because I had a friend that had a yorkie die from CT, so I took him to the vet and they did X-rays and everything of his trachea, which came out looking perfect. The vet explained to me that with Yorkie puppies they have very small lungs, so if they over play its harder for them to breathe as their lungs can only hold so much air, and as they get older, their. Lungs grow and they eventually grow out of it. Sure enough, where as when Gizmo was younger he did it a lot the more he would run and play, but now at 7 months old he only does it occasionally. So with a pup that young this could also be causing the problem, small lungs that just need to grow and get more used to taking in more air the more he plays. |

honking puppy I love the idea of taking a video of the problem for the vet! Thanks for all the helpful advice! At any rate, the boy has not honked since i posted the first message several days ago. Got my eye on him tho. |
