9 Week Old Yorkie HouseBreaking Too Early? Hi everyone, I just brought home a 9 week old baby boy 5 days ago! I got him from a breeder, so this is his first time away from his litter. I got him a crate, a toy and coushin and but it in the crate but he would just cry HARD for hours straight. I figured that is not healthy for him so I stopped putting him in there. He just seems to follow me around and want to sleep with me at night, which I also don't believe can be good either. SO, I finally thought maybe the crate wasnt as comfortable as it could be and but a TOWEL on the bottom of it. I did this today, and as he went in, HISELF, I gave him a pebble of his food everytime he went in and out. I eventually closed the door, he cried for all of 2 minutes and has been sleeping in there for the past hour. Is this pattern going to be successful and is it healthy? |
It sounds like it will be successful if he only cried for 2 minutes. I've rewarded mine for getting in the crate on their own, but they still fussed. I had to put their crates on the nightstand beside my bed so they could see me, and slowly move them into the position I wanted them in. With Dallas it only took about a week to get his crate into position (But god forbid I move it now! lol He fusses if it's not where it's supposed to be), and it took about a month with Rory. It sounds like your way will be much faster! You might also try putting a shirt or something in the crate with him, so he has your scent close to him. |
Your puppy is too young to successfully crate train unless you can give him 24 hour care everyday. Right now he is still in the infant stage. He has no control over his pottying and will not until he is about 16 weeks old. Pups his age get warmth and comfort from snuggling and sleeping with the litter mates and mother. He will probably cry himself to sleep anywhere you put him except on you or beside you. Dogs are very social animals that do not like being alone. They just naturally bond with the person that takes care of them and want to be with you. Many people have had success putting their pups in a puppy play pen when they cannot watch the pup. They are big enough for a nice bed and a potty pad and toys. They are not meant for long term care but are handy for when you have to clean or go out for a short time. |
Try and make it fun to be in the crate, try and make I this fun place , giving him little bits of his food is a good idea .Keep the door open and let him come in and out and let him have little naps in there. I would keep it open like a little kennel that he comes to like going in not somewhere that he is put in and left on his own. Good luck |
Thanks everyone for your replies. It's great to take that all in. He is not crying anymore in the crate, which is great. I was actually able to get some sleep last night after 5 days! It definately is a fulltime job, but totally worth it! :) |
