How long until our new puppy loves us? We have had Thor for just over a week now. So far, he shows almost no affection to us, cowers in the corners, shakes if we approach. Now, he seems to have a stomach thing, has had diarrhea for the past day and a half, eating, but then has a wet movement or two after every meal. I am going to call the vet tomorrow. We got Thor from a very well respected breeder, and he comes from a loving home (he was affectionate with the Breeder, and Thor also lived with his actual doggie mom, who really took care of him). Thor was older when we got him, for a puppy, 5 months. We are getting very little affection from him. He is a very well mannered dog, almost never barks, mostly quiet through the night, but we see almost no life, no fun, no puppy energy. I am still waiting for my first waggy tail. The pup we saw when we got him, running around, playing with his Mom and the breeder, tail wagging. We get none of that. Just cowering and shaking. My wife is about ready to give up. My 8 year old, who has been very patient, is also getting frustrated. We lost our yorkie very suddenly end of December, and this one is the new family member designed to help us all mourn and recover from the sudden loss. Instead we are getting nothing. Please tell me to chill out and give it time, that 8 days isn't enough time, that this is not uncommon. He comes from a great home, probably misses his Mom, had his entire world turned upside down, it is 6 degrees outside (that used to affect our last one), is still shocked and comatose and will come around. Right? Please. Help! |
Chill out!!!! J/k. It sounds like Thor misses the family he grew up with and is still getting used to y'all. Don't worry it takes time and it hasn't even been a full month yet. He'll warm up believe me. He's in a new place with new ppl and new smells and doesn't really know what to make of it. He'll settle in. Just a question did the breeder give you any albon for the transition so his immune system won't be taking a kicking? Oh and enjoy the quiet while you can when he gets comfy he'll be raising h*** |
Just hug him and cradle him and pet him, He will come around when he feels safe and comfy. But he may just be sick, don't give up on him. |
Thanks!!! No as to the Albon. What is that? We would try anything. Breeder said to try some pepto bismal with a syringe, which we are planning to try tonight. |
Sorry to hear about your loss! :( Thor will come around. He's just confused and scared in the new surroundings. Think of it from his prospective; he's been plucked from his family and brought to a whole new environment. Just keep loving on him and show him he is safe and loved. Were you given anything from his breeder to remind him of "home"? Toys or blankets that smell like his mom and his old house? If not, maybe you can still get something from them to help. |
It is just gonna take him some time just keep being patient with him and try not to show your frustrations. |

Right? Please. Help! Ok you asked for it. . . Please chill out and give it time !! :D As a breeder and raising puppies from day one watching them as they reach different mile stone in the short time they are in my care I see all types of different developmental stages. Some pups are just more outgoing that others and take longer to adjust to change. Leaving momma and their litter mates is a huge deal for a tiny pup. Mom, siblings and the breeder are their whole world and when that is taken away and some do suffer from depression. So be sure that they are getting the proper nutrition and schedules meals are also very important. Plus, making sure that they are getting plenty of rest is also very important. You will want to watch for signs of Hypoglycemic shock if they are not eating properly: Dog Hypoglycemia (Low Blood Sugar): Symptoms, Treatment, and Prevention Keep some Karo syrup on hand for emergencies. It takes time for them to adjust to the change in their surrounding and care givers but it will happen. Normally it can take up to 3-4 days but that is just an estimate. Just be sure to spend lots of time cuddling and playing with them. Try some cheerio cereal for treats when playing, there is no harm in bribery. |
Definitely call the vet and bring him in. I am pet sitting a much older 22 months or so Yorkie, and she is cowering and shaking. But it has been now one month, and she is slowly changing. She has accepted pets, and jumped up on my lap. She is even getting brave enough to bark at my big boy. It is just so very different. You might also try treating him with you on the floor. |
I can so relate to your post. I have been in your shoes, almost exactly. We got Barney when our first yorkie, Charlie, died. It was almost exactly as you described, even the stomach issues. Give your new baby time to adjust. Barney hid out in his carrier the first few weeks we had him. We literally had to bribe him to come out and play. I can remember wondering if he would ever bond with us. Guess what....he did!!!! Chill (your words, lol)....it will get better. Give this baby a chance. It's a hard job for a little puppy to try to fill the big shoes of a beloved lost pet. |
I agree with the last paragraph in your post, chill out!! :p hee hee :) All kidding aside, it is very possible that puppy was super comfy with his doggy mom at the breeders house, and your house is just too "new" for his personality to show through. If this is any consolation, my pup hated me when I first got him. Ok, maybe hate is a strong word, but he did not want to be around me at all. Over time, he got use to me, and now his true crazy quirky personality shines through. He went from needing 4 ft of space between me and him to him needing to be on top of me. :p Do get the puppy checked out for the potential tummy issues. It could be stress, or a true tummy issue that needs to be addressed by the vet. Good luck!!! |
If I were you & your family I'd start spending a lot of time on the floor. Watch TV, use your computer, get down at his level. When he's really tired, try to hold him. Keep the breeder informed. Good luck! |
good luck// you have been given great advice |
I agree with the others and give it some time. It's a big change for them and some need longer than others to adjust. Check for blood and/or mucus in the stool as it could be stress colitis, hypoglycemia, if he is not eating regularly, and dehydration, if he continues to have diarrhea. Just a few things we learned from the vet as well as reading this website. If the diarrhea persists, a visit to your vet is the best thing to do. Hope it all works out! |
Like everyone says, give him more time and he'll definitely come around. Dogs, much like humans, all have different personalities. I bet once he bonds with you guys, he'll be like valcro! :) |
