Peeing On Her Hair HELP
 
Hi there. . .
Since my yorkie turned 13 month her hair become very long. When she goes to potty she pees on her hair. She's potty trained to go on puppy pads. She is all most 2years and her hair is touching the ground. I bath her once a week but sometimes twice if she's start to smell of the urine on her hair. I do not want to shave her coat. Do you guys also have this problem or what can I do?

We do a "sanitary shave" where you trim down the under side of them, but their coat on the top/sides stays however you like. It is really nice to have all of that area cleaner. It also keeps down on the knots/mats on their under arms/legs and belly from laying down.

This is what Rasta has, ever since we've had the sanitary cut there's no "pee smell" or dingle berries lol

When Mimi had floor length hair, we has the same problem. I used dirt & urine repelling products like CC Ice on Ice & The Stuff. Since she is very light, esp towards the back, they worked great. The urine stains were gone, but urine still got on her bum hairs. So I had to wash her bum area every night along w/her paws, which I do anyway after our walks.
After awhile, I couldn't wash her every time she went, so I cut only the hairs on her bum area & back legs. This solved the problem. Her hair didn't look funny either.

You can use a comb as a guide & cut the hair to a desired length. The side leg hair will blend in w/the back, it sounds like it will look funny, but it won't be.

I do the same thing. Shortest guard on the hair cutter.

I do that with our yorkie poo its a male. But my yorkie is a female.

I don't think I have any pics of her bum shot (loll) when she had long hair & these are not good examples: Attachment 395482Attachment 395483 but the back is trimmed. You don't need to cut too much. If your girl is lighter, you can actually see the urine stains. You can just cut the hairs that are stained bc those are the hairs that's touching the pee pad or ground when they pee. It's harder to see on darker hair...I also cut the fine hairs in the inner part of her legs & lower belly, along w/the arm pits. Since those are high rubbing areas & tend to tangle.

Found this pic, drew a line where you're supposed to cut...Attachment 395484 It will be her bum area where she will sit on, right above her back knee. I used to wrap Mimi's tail bc it was really long w/tissue paper, otherwise that always got pee on it too.

These are not the greatest pics, but hopefully will give you an idea of where to trim. They were taken b4 Mimi's bath, so please excuse the messy hair.
Attachment 395599 For longer hair, you won't be trimming so close to the bum, you can leave about 2-3". If it still gets wet, you can trim some more. Area in the black box is where you want to trim. The right box is too far right. Area in the white box is the inner legs, you can trim this area if it tangles or gets wet when they pee.

Attachment 395597 I combed out the hair that is going to be trimmed.

Thank you! They're all in some sort of short cut on the body w/long hair legs now. It's just too hot & humid in southern Cali during the summer months. I do grow their hair out in the winter.

It started after she was groomed, at first I thought it was because the groomer cut her "pee string" but that grew back.
Her leg hair is about as long as it was pre-groom. I cut some of it off to help with the pee but it's still not perfect.

Mimimomo I have to ask what products you are using to keep your babies coats
so nice. My little Roxy still has her puppy coat as I am just not ready to see her in the all silver coat which is forcing its way through...lol. She has a beautiful coat but it seems to have stopped growing and doesn't appear as healthy as your babies. Please share!!

Huh that is strange. Sometimes when they get a hair cut, they lose that weight of hair, maybe that's what's changed it's getting wet. I used to have pee strings on my guys but cut it off bc I was noticing tiny pee stains on my white sheets! Too much pee was getting on there & dripping on the floor too yuck.

Thank you! Right now, we're using espree products. I like that it's almost all natural & it has coconut based cleanser, jojoba & aloe. It makes them very soft, shiny & it's good for my sensitive gal too.

I also give them fish skin chews to help clean their teeth (Beams by the Honest Kitchen & Polkadog) & it's packed w/omega 3's. Once a month, I give them unsalted sardines packed in spring water from Trader Joe's, they LOVE it but it is stinky! I hold my breath when I give it to them loll.

When my boy was growing coat to be shown I use to make 2 pony tails, 1 on each side in the area where it was getting wet from him hiking his leg. Then it got long enough to be wrapped. I do have a tiny girl that had a long coat also and when she would squat to pee her hair would drag through the pee. If she peed a lot the pad would not absorb fast enough and again drag through the pee, same with her...pony tails on each side. It looks pretty cute really, top knot on top and pony tail on each side. Also trimming the potty area helps.
