fontanelle opening Does anyone know if it is normal for an 11 week old puppy to have an open fontanelle 5mm? if so when should it close? Thanks. |
I is suppose to close by 6 months of age. After that, it probably will not! One with an open fontanel is at risk for hydrocephalus. I have a little girl that has an open fontanel and she is now 1 year old. She is tiny and not quite 3 pounds. She has not had any problems as of yet, but it is always a possibility. Keep her safe by no bumps to the top of her head. Tatiana is checked for fluid each time she goes to the vet. I pray hers will close and that you don't have any issues with it! How big is she? |
open fontanelle she is 1.3 lbs at 11 weeks old |
i am praying i just bought her from a store in davie florida which i thought got their puppies from reputable breeders but when i tried to find out the breeders address i googled them and i found out they had a horrific reputation as a puppy mill. I paid over $5000.00 for her and I love her to death even though i only have her a week now. she is precious..... the vet i brought her to said her vaccination records are so screwed up so she wants to revaccinate her to be sure she is covered properly. I am a very smart person and I can't believe I got suckered into loving this baby doll from a store. i was researching about 5 different breeders in my area to go visit but at xmas time i went to visit my daughter and we stopped in to this lovely looking designer shop. with a price tag of over $5000.00 i thought she had to have come from a very good breeder. I should have known better. i never ever purchased any of my other pets from a store. I love her more than anything but I hope she will be healthy after I read all the horrible things about the breeder. Her name was Starmye Halpain in Oklahoma, and I purchased her from Teacups puppies and Boutique Eleanora Bonfini,in Davie,Florida. |
I hope your baby will turn out to be healthy. Not all puppy mill pups end up sick. I have one with an open fontanel that never closed and she has done fine with it. Once your baby gets older, if you keep a top knot over that spot, it will help protect it. Congrats on your new baby and best wishes! |
How sad, but she has found a good home and I wish you the best! She is about the size of Tatiana (1lb 5 oz. @12 wks) Congratulations and if you need an understanding ear, please fill free to PM me! |
I am so sorry your baby pup has open font. There's a few pups here on YT that is healthy as can be (like Connie's Faith), they live normal lives. I have a friend that has a Chi that is 6 or 7 years old & her font never closed. She's living a very pampered life, very happy & healthy! Quote:

Hopefully she will remain healthy. My Roxie has an open fontanelle and she was from a good breeder. She told me about it before I took her. She is 6 years old now and has never had a problem. Like Connie, I keep her bow over it just for extra protection. |
Thank you all for the encouraging words. I love her to pieces!!!!when I figure out how to post a picture on this site I will. Her name is "Dior" and she is adorable. |
Congratulations on your new addition. Would love to see pics of your precious little Dior. Like others have stated, not all pups with open fonts are sickly, although they are at greater risk for head injury. Little Butterbean has an open font. He is three years old and is as healthy as the horse whose tail he swings from. The little Bean is all of 2.5 lbs. on a good day and has had almost every medical test known to man - so we know that the only health issue is his open font. This little bean size pooch is terrier through and through. Although we aren't proud of all of them, some of his exploits include killing chickens that weigh more than he does (the dumb chickens fly into his backyard) and his terrier blood runs thick. He has also cornered a possum, and is always on chipmunk patrol and keeps the other furkids he lives with under control with his "evil noise". I share this info, not to steal your thread, but to offer you hope and encouragement. |
