Newbie intro Hi, I'm Karina, and Mocha is my new puppy. She's a Yorkie-poo, but she looks more Yorkie than Poodle, so I figured I'd check out a forum for Yorkies, as I haven't found any for the mix. Anyway, I'm a first time dog owner, and will need all the help and advice I can get, so I'm looking forward to poking around this site, to see what I can find. For now, my only concern is her eating. She seems fussy. Sometimes she eats, sometimes she doesn't. I've read in many sites, and a book a friend let me borrow, that I shouldn't leave her food out. But the family we bought her from said that I should so she can eat when she wants to. So, I'm not sure what to do. :( I don't want her to get sick from not eating well. Well, thanks for taking the time to read my post. I'm going to search for threads on fussy eaters. Take care, Karina. |
Hi and WELCOME to the site - you should find all kinds of info and try to learn the site - you can search key words at the top where it says SEARCH on the blue bar - good luck !! ps - I'm Villette and don't have picky eaters but there is only ONE kind of treat for them! Oh and Congrats on your new darling! |
Feed her often or leave the food out at all time. They need to keep their bodies fueled so their blood sugar doesn't drop. What are you feeding? It is best for the first few weeks to keep her on the food that the breeder was feeding....to many changes really stress them out. Moistening it with some homemade chicken broth might encourage her to eat her meals......small meals 4 times a day or free feed if possible. Congratulations on your little Mocha? Please post pictures when you have a chance as we love all pictures! |
Hi, Thanks for the advice. I left it out for a while, but she didn't touch it. I tried feeding her by hand, but she didn't like it. I just had a break through. I mixed up the dry, with some canned (more/less equal parts) and added a few tablespoons of warm chicken broth. She's eating now, I think she may have finished it (somewhere between 1/4 cup - 1/2 cup). I feel relieved. I guess she's just a very fussy eater :( . But I guess there isn't much I can do about that. Thanks! Karina & Mocha :animal-pa |
I am getting to know my first yorkie mix puppy also! I have had a few dogs though. As far as feeding goes, I think it becomes a matter of preference. I like to have scheduled feedings so their poops are on schedule (makes it easier for me, especially having multiple dogs). It have heard it is important to feed a yorkie pup 3-4 times a day, and make sure she eats, even if you have to hand-feed her (which I have had to do with Scout on a few occasions) because they get hypoglycemic. Is that your pup in your profile pic? So cute! |
Not sure my last reply posted, but I'll try again. I got her to eat by making a mix of canned, dry, and chicken broth (warmed up), and she ate most of it. I'm wondering if I should leave it out all night? I don't want to because she seems to be eating her poop :( I've found some of it in her bed in the mornings. Yuk! I really wanted to get her on a schedule to monitor her pooping only because she can't be trusted alone with it. She's in a pen, has a crate attached to it, and I'm paper training her. I work full time, and everyone will be out all day soon, so she has to learn to go on the pad. Anyway, thanks for all the compliments and well wishes for my Mocha baby. That is her in my profile pic. TTFN, Karina. |
