New Yorkie mom Hi everyone I am a new Yorkie mom to Adora Jewel who is 8 weeks old today, she got her name because she is so Adorable and such a Jewel. I am here to learn as much as I can about Yorkie's so I can be the best mom possible to this little girl, she is about 1 lb. and a little spitfire of a girl, any advice would be very welcome. |
Welcome to YorkieTalk and congrats on your new pup. Most good breeders wont let there puppies leave there moms until 12 weeks because there still learning a lot from there moms. She's pretty tiny and young so you need to make sure she eats every couple of hours and get nutrical and keep an eye out for hypoglycemia. I also would make sure she is not alone for to many hours just in case she is not eating and experiences hypoglycemia. You also need to look up and learn about teaching bite inhibition because that is one of the things she would be learning from her mom if she was still with her. Also make sure not to take her to pet stores and out for walks until she has had all of her shots. |
You got great advice from lovetodream. I am just wondering what breeder you got her from as it is strange for a good breeder to allow them to leave their mother so young. |
New mom I am sorry I should have clarified better she is still with her mom who is belongs to my brother and sister-in-law but she is officially mine and I spend time with her everyday till she comes home full time. I am just trying to learn as much as I can before then. My sister-in-law is not a breeder per say she just had her two Yorkies bred and Adora Jewel is one of two, thank you for the advice I don't want to do things wrong with this little one. |
I would touch her feet, even "fake" clip the nails, same with her ears and face, even gently wiping them a little damp cloth. Maybe combing with a little cat brush. Turn on noisy appliances near her. Use the crate or beds/blankets now so they will smell familiar. If you would like her to fetch, play ball now. Same with a little harness or clothes. You have a wonderful oppurtunity to introduce her to people things at the same time she is learning from her mom! There is a protocol that they use to train K-9 puppies on the internet to make sure they are easy to accept new things... |
new mom Thank you I will start that today, she is really good about playing and being held and has a ton of energy for such a little thing. |
How exciting!!!! |
Congratulations. Hello and Welcome to YT. "Yorkies For Dummies" is the first one I recommend."Yorkshire Terriers: A Smart Owners Guide" is the second book. These are excellent resource books .Another book "How to Housebreak Your Dog in 7 Days" Is very helpful. They are not as easy to housebreak. Good luck |
Congratulations! You will learn so much on here. Hypoglycemia is the one thing I would make sure you are familiar with. |
