we are new!
 

we have had Kuzco for about one month. he is 16 weeks old now. i think i have attached his pic . not sure. i am on the site trying to bone up on training methods. i never had such a small dog before. He weighs 3.5 pounds and is a sweetie! until he isn"t-LOL! That's a terrier for u tho. He is named after the emperor in "The Emperor's New Groove" a disney movie. My daughter named him. We live near Seattle. Our rain is hard on house training but we are getting there.

Welcome to YT. He is a little cutie and yes, the terrier is a different sort of dog to train. You kind of have to work with their stubborn streak and not against it since trying to fight it just incites their terrier disposition.:)

Can't help you with the photo. I am the worst dealing with that sort of thing.

He is just now at the age (usually at 16 weeks of age)that he can start to control his output of urine. Up until that age they have very little control so it can be a lot of stress on you at first when trying to train a pup. It's kind of like expecting a new born to not potty in it's diaper. Sometimes they do learn some bad habits during those first weeks in your home when they can't control their pottying. The accidents can set up scent in the home that encourage them to continue to potty in those places. You can't smell them but the pup can even after you clean the area as well as you know how.

Hopefully you will get through this but it takes time. Try giving him a healthy treat when he gets it right rather than punishing when he gets it wrong. Scolding can cause him to sneak off and potty where you can't see him. They really respond better to reward than the punishment cycle.

These are excellent resource books .Another book "How to Housebreak Your Dog in 7 Days" Is very helpful. They are not as easy to housebreak. Here is the schedule that they are using. A question:can a Yorkie safely wear a collar? and how do u get him used to it-or a harness. When that is accomplished-how do u get him used to a leash? When I take him Kuzco out for potty training he is beginning to stray.I don't want him hurt and for potty training i have to keep him on task. Seems like collars and leashes is the first step? Thx!

It is not recommended for a Yorkie to wear a typical collar. They have a very delicate trachea area. I have a break away cat collar on Gracie but it is only there so she has ID tags on at all times. She wears a harness for walks.

A harness that does not touch the neck area is best for small dogs. If your pup is jumpy about it let him see and smell it first. Put it on the floor and let him get comfortable with the idea of it. Try having him wear it inside at first. Some little ones are not happy with the idea but once they associate the idea of the harness with going outside they usually start to love even the sight of it.

Healthy treats are great motivators for a Yorkie. Giving a small treat after you put the harness on him will also help him associate the harness with something he loves.

You can do the same process with the leash if he seems to object to the idea. Let him drag it around inside and give him lots of encouragement and some treats for being so good. If he is the nervous or suspicious type just take it slowly with lots of encouragement and small treats. He will eventually associate both the harness and the leash with things he likes.

I think it is never to early to start leash training, honestly I worry about a bird snatching lilah up in my rural area or her sniffing out a raccoon and picking a fight. So many scary stories on here about off leash yorkie's, I would say go for it with the leash :thumbup: a definite second to the harness. I have had my interest piqued by the buddy belts: Buddy Belt Harness another yt member here sells them and also recall seeing a silk no tug harness from another yt member... Shoot I wish i could remember who right now, they were beautiful and I love the no tangle concept. You should check them out :)

Kuzco is absolutely adorable! I'm sure he has you wrapped around his little paws. :)

For training methods, I learned that positive reinforcement methods are most successful. I also use the "ignore" or "withdrawing attention" method for some behaviors. When Max would purposely do something naughty for attention and wouldn't listen to a polite correction, I would ignore him or even leave the room where he couldn't follow. It takes all of the fun out of what he is doing.
