Yorkie vs Silky - again... I know there are a few of those posts but I just do not get it:confused:... I got a one year old yorkie over Craigslist, microchipped, with AKC papers, the Pedigree certificate but she looks like mix of both. She weights 11 pounds, seems she is done with growing. She is very calm, the sweetest doggy ever, I still do not understand why the previous owners sold her but it is not important. I would like to know your opinion if you have well trained eyes and can tell if she is yorkie or silky. Thank you very much! You can find her under my profile in an album. |
I am of no help to you.. But, our Roxie almost has the same color scheme and a person who had dogs like that said she was a pure silkie. but don't quote me... I would like to know for sure too.:aimeeyork |
She is beautiful , I think she is all yorkie just a big girl lol |
They are genetically related and Huddersfield Ben who was the foundation sire of the Yorkie had a grandmother by the name of Katie who is said was taken to Australia and mated with the Australian terrier resulting in the Silky terrier. A Yorkie or a Silky — What’s the Difference? | Silky Terrier Club of Central Florida The basic differences are the Yorkie is smaller, more square shaped, hair grows longer and will reach the floor, and muzzle is shorter. There are individual differences and much depends on if the breeder chose the breeding pair wisely, or simply bred her pets. I've heard that its very common for backyard breeders in Arizona (probably in other states as well) to get a silky as the mother so that the litter will be much larger, so buyer beware. The following is taken from the Silky Terrier Club o;f America: Comparison of Silky to Aussie & Yorkie Silky Terrier 8 weeks 5 months Adult Head Adult Body •Terrier of refined bone but sturdy and well muscled •Blue & Tan coloration (any shading of blue w/rich tans acceptable) •10 inch at shoulder and approximate 10 lb (weight to body frame acceptable) •Single coated dog with hair silky in texture. Dark Almond eyes and 'V' shaped set ears on top of the head. •Note: Longer length of body ~ wedge shape head ~ finer bone but well muscled ~ single shaft silky coat not floor length • Good pets for families but not good with small children as they are prey driven terriers and may 'chase' & 'nip' on occasion Yorkshire Terrier 6 weeks Pet Yorkie Adult Head Adult Body •Blue & Tan coloration (must be slate blue) •Small, petite dogs that are terrier in nature not to be over 7 lbs •Square built (shoulder height equal to length of body) with long silky coat to the floor •Note: square body - shorter muzzle - single shaft coat to floor - 7 lbs or under (for show) •Good pets in families with older children (not for small children) many pets go over 7 lbs © 2007 by the STCA ~ All rights reserved Powered by Texas Gulf Coast Web Services |
Thank you! I've studied the theory for three days now:) but still can see some silky accents in her and some yorkie ones. Well, I guess I will have to wait and decide according to her fur, if it grows pass the ground line or not:). |
Due to bad breeding there are Yorkies who don't look like yorkies and who don't follow the standard. Just weight doesn't make the dog a silky or a yorkie there are people on this bored with 20 pound full bred yorkies. I think she looks yorkie to me. |
If your really interested, you can have your vet do a DNA test :-) looks yorkie to me but I wouldn't know the difference lol. Congrats on your new baby :-) |
I think she's just a bigger Yorkie. She's gorgeous and looks all Yorkie to me :) |
Thank you very much for your answers:), now I have to search in older posts how to break her "eating poopies" habit, grrr! Just found out she is doing it, yuck! |

Her nose looks like a Silkie but her color looks more yorkie. It is not always true that Silkies are bigger as I have a 7lb pure bred Silkie and then one of my rescues is a 13 pound purebred Yorkie. Go figure lol. Either way she is beautiful |
I understand your questions; I have a "purebred" Yorkie, that came with "papers", and the dam and sire's names, but Graysee looks more Silky than Yorkie to me every day. Her online pictures are old, as she is getting lighter all the time. She hovers between 11-12 pounds at every vet visit; her snout is longer than most Yorkies, and her ears are bigger. She has a longer body, and is very muscular. Who knows? She is still our baby, and we love her no matter WHAT she is! |
