how often to feed I just got 8 week old Sophie yesterday. She is cyrrently eating three times a day. I would like to switch to two because of my work schedule. I would leave a little hard food out all day, how do i do that? |
Good for you ! I fully support that availability, and from day one that a Pup arrives here, it has (several kinds) of Food available to it 24/7. I like to offer my guys a variety (Beef/Foul/Sea) so they can choose what they/it would like to eat for that meal. I sincerely believe (with a fair amount of empirical evidence) that the full time availability reduces resource guarding, and makes for a very congenial affiliation between my guys concerning treats and food. Concerning the frequency of replenishment... I'd put an appropriate amount out (your opinion) to last one day, and see how that goes. She may gobble it up to start with, but as time passes She should start "trusting" the availability and regulating herself...mine do ! |
Excuse me for the double post, but the 5 minute rule got me again. So... All three of the types of food I have out are dry. When a type gets close (a couple spoonful's) of being out, I fill it up. (that way it seems inexhaustible to them) And... This approach to feeding has been SO easy on me. I just drop by and check things once a day, and add when necessary. |
For a puppy I would leave food out all day. If you not home and he doesn't eat he could experience hypoglycemia which if no one was around to notice and help could be very bad. |

Do you leave Sophie in an xpen or crate? If you do, just leave a bowl of food/water in the xpen/crate. Also.. if you want to feed her just twice a day, I'm assuming you're not coming back for lunch to check up on her? If so, are you using potty pads? She's really young so she'll be going potty often. You wouldn't want her to soil where she sleeps... |
