HELP!! Territorial Marking We have 3 dogs at my house. Gizmo (a shih tzu poodle mix), Oreo (a poodle), and Mork (a Yorkshire Terrier). Gizmo is our male puppy and he is about a year and a half old. He's been marking his territory since we got him and that's usually not a problem as long as he is outside and marks the yard. However, with Mork here, it has become a problem. Unfortunately, Mork runs under him when he lifts his leg. He's, also, lifted his leg on Mork (and some of the other pets). How do we stop this? |

How long has Mork been there? |

I don't care that he is marking trees and things in the backyard. He doesn't mark in the house. The problem is only the times that he marks the other pets and that Mork runs under him while he is marking sometimes. Mork has been a part of our family for about six weeks. Thanks! |
You're going to have to stop Mork from running under Gizmo. Gizmo can't really stop himself in those situations. However, if Gizmo is seeking out marking your other pets, you have to step in and stop him. There is usually a sign, like intense sniffing, that let's you know he's about to mark. As soon as you see that, you have to correct and redirect Gizmo. I'm like you. If Kaji is sniffing up a tree getting ready to mark, I let it go. If Kaji is sniffing up one of our foster friends or our foster friend's bed, I'm right there to correct the behavior. I'm assuming there is also some marking going on indoors, right? When inside limit Gizmo's free roam until you trust him 100%. When he does get to wander, you have to be there to give him your full attention. As soon as he does the intense sniffing, stop him. The belly bad helps because it stops Gizmo from completing his mission. It will help get your point across that inside everything off limits. |

Thanks! Gizmo actually doesn't mark in the house at all. We trust him in the house (but he still doesn't get free roam). How do you correct your little Kaji if she does sniff up one of your foster friends? Just a firm no when he looks like he's about to mark her? Also, do you have any suggests on how to stop Mork from running under him? Also, what is a belly band? I like to bring them out to play chase with each other. I'd prefer not to have to take them out separately since they seem to have so much fun chasing each other. Thanks!! |
When Kaji use to mark, I would double clap to get his attention and follow it with a firm "no". I didn't yell, but it was a firm no. A belly band is a piece of material that goes around the dogs belly covering his Mr Peeps. The idea behind it is it catches any pee when they try to mark, thus protecting your house and items from getting marked. In my opinion, if you don't have marking issues inside I wouldn't spend money on a belly band. Instead, what I would do is be there when the boys are playing chase. As soon as I see Gizmo lose interest in the game and want to sniff around, I would step in and physically move Mork if he got in the way. At least that's what I would do. :) |
