5 month old eating poop?! I have been training my Lola to use puppy pads inside and she does pretty good with peeing on them, sometimes she will have accidents, but she refuses to poop on them. She only wants to go on the rugs in the kitchen and then tries to eat it! I don't understand the point of her doing this. Has anybody else had this problem with their puppies? If anyone has any suggestions it would be GREATLY appreciated! |
Hi! i've never had this problem with my pups but I do know that it could be a behavioral issue or it could indicate a health issue such as a lack of nutrients. I think you should probably take your pup to the vet to rule out any health issues. However, it could also be that your pup is simply trying eat up the evidence so she won't get in trouble for pooping on the rugs. |
We have no rugs, my guys can't tell the difference...I have to resort to wearing fuzzy slippers in colder months. Some eat poop bc their food is not fully digested, it still smells like the food! Or they're just bored & put it in their mouth, they don't actually eat it, but it's still gross. Adding digestive enzymes w/ probiotics to their daily diet will help their digestive system absorb all the nutrients. It will stop poop eating. |
I had the same issue with my baby girl until I switched her over to "Stella and Chewy's" dehydrated patties. She no longer eats her poops, but on a rare occasion, she moves the poop off her indoor grass if I don't catch it within a few hours. How do I know this? I set up a "poop-cam" on her grass - an Internet camera by Dropcam, that records and alerts me on my iPhone whenever there's activity on the grass. I'm on to her little tricks now - ! I also use the camera to peek in on her when I'm away from home. |
Feed her a tablespoon of crushed pineapple every day. Worked like a charm for Laddy. They hate the taste of their poo after eating it. |
Thank you all so much! I've never heard of the pineapple trick but I'll definitely try it. If that doesnt work I will call the vet. |
I don't know what it is in the pineapple but they hate it in their stool lol. Mine both love pineapple so getting them to eat it was never an issue. |
I agree with the pineapple! Works great...and they like the pineapple too! |
How long does it take for the pineapple to start working? I started giving her a tablespoon of it every morning since you all told me and it isn't working yet. She makes the biggest mess out of the poop! |
Oh my it worked the first day for mine, I don't know what to tell you now. |
It never worked for mine either. He's 10 months old and still does it. I changed his food and he doesn't do it as much. |
The pineapple didn't work for us either. Someone suggested that I sprinkle ACCENT seasoning on her food, but I don't eat it - so I wouldn't want to feed it to her either. Then someone else suggested that I intercept her poop before she got to it and put cayenne pepper on it. I never tried it. As soon as I switched her to a raw food diet (Stella & Chewey's dehydrated patties) she lost her "taste" for her own poop. I still have to watch her like an eagle when we're out walking... she still has a hankering for other animal's poop! I talked to our Vet about this and he said that Yorkies are natural born scavengers, and as gross as it seems to us - this is not abnormal behavior. |

I may try switching her food to see if that works. |
