Questions about my baby yorkie! she cries while pooping help!!!
 

Hey everyone,

I just adopted a baby yorkie two days ago. she's 9 weeks old and 1 lb 3 oz She barely eats but still manages to poop twice or three times a day. When she poops she drags her butt, and she cries while pooping :( My question is, is this normal? I took her for her check up yesterday and the vet said she might be constipated or could have worms or parasites, (lets hope not) So I dropped off a sample of her poop this morning so we will see. She is not constipated because her poop is solid and firm which is normal....
She also had her tail docked when she was 3 days old (not my choice) and I think they might have cut it too short.... how do I know if too short is too short? Or am I just being paranoid?

Second question, is it normal for her to be tired a lot? She will eat, play for about 20 mins then go back to sleep again. Is something wrong with her?

Next question, is it normal for yorkie puppies to sometimes fall over when running and roll over when they get too excited? Or to bump into things from time to time??

Also, I give her 3-4 drops of nutri-cal every day is this a good amount, what are some feeding tips to make her eat more? I want her to get bigger already! shes tiny!

It's not just a puppy you have there, it's a baby.... I'm new here as well so my guess is that your breeder delivered the puppy about 3 weeks too early. Possibly was weened too soon. Look at some of these other threads... there's a reference to a form of "soup" for the younger puppies. My guess is solid food should be more limited.. think very soft food... the more experienced will add to that.

To the tired question... sounds normal for a baby...

The falling down and bumping into things doesn't sound normal to me I would get a second opinion from another vet

Welcome. Your baby is tiny so you need to make sure she is eating frequently. I would try some wet food, but introduce it slowly as not to cause tummy upset. Puppies do sleep a lot but it is also a symptom of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) and needs to be watched closely. Puppies can run and bump into things but falling over I would be very worried about hypoglycemia since she isn't eating well. I would get another vet visit and have blood work done just to be sure she is ok. Hopefully you will get some answers on the stool sample. Since she is so young and tiny you have to watch her closely because they can go down quickly. If you haven't already, I would make sure you know where the nearest 24 hour vet is. I live vert close to one and it has saved my babies several times. Hopefully she just has a simple case of worms and will eat better and you cn fully enjoy you new puppy.

Make sure she eats something, gets some protein after the nutri-cal. It's pure corn syrup, it will spike up & blood glucose level & what goes up must come down. Food is the best glucose for blood, more stable. Are you feeding her kibble & how often? You can try moistening it, make it soft or even mix it w/a good canned food. She's tiny, so her stomach is tiny, feed her small amounts several x's a day.I would restrict her playing time to 10-15 mins until she's eating well on her own...did the vet show you how to check her gums? It should be moist & pink.

I would get a second opinion crying when pooing is 100% not normal. Puppies do tend to sleep a lot after playing that is normal. Bumping into things could or could not be you need to ask a vet. I would not give nutrical unless she is having hypoglycemic episodes or it could make her sugar go up and then drop suddenly.

About the firm poopie thing & her crying, nutri-cal actually makes poopies soft...it might just be that she's constipated. Is she drinking enough water? It might help to moisten the kibble or adding canned food, it will get xtra moisture into her. I agree w/the other posters, her falling over or bumping into things are not normal. I would get a 2nd opinion if it continues.

When I got Zoey my life was pretty restricted. I fed her four times per day for several months. The falling over and bumping into things is not normal. As for crying when pooping Zoey only did that if her stools were a little too hard. They are such babies. Good luck with your little one. Be sure to check back and let us know about the worms.

The vet checked her anal glands and everything was fine with her butt so we'll see if its the poop that's the problem. It might be her tail!!!! its short!! maybe too short! how do you know if the tail was docked too short? Can this cause problems in the future or will she grow into it?

Also, she's eating just about as much as her little stomach can take in. She eats maybe a teaspoon twice a day of mixed wet chicken cesar food and dry eukanuba for small puppies it comes in a purple bag.

I have a slippery wood floor, she runs and sometimes slides lol or she will slip and trip causing her to bump into things. is this ok? she gets right back up and starts playing again.

I would say that the bumping into things could be normal, it depends on if it goes away over time. Winston was like 8.5 weeks when we got him and he was definitely clumsy at first, but grew into his coordination. He is still a picky eater, but did perfectly fine, we had no issues with hypoglycemia or anything. I did give him nutracal and also mixed some in I his food which enticed him to eat (sometimes lol). Being tired after 15 mins of play is totally normal, they develop more stamina every day. The pooping thing seems weird to me, he very well might have worms, which is very common for puppies and is pretty easily treated. I know the feeling of always thinking something wrong when they're little. Most likely he is fine, just keep a close eye on him :)

I figured the clumsiness will go away and is just because she's a puppy. How small was your puppy when he was 8.5 weeks? and how big is he now?

I will try mixing the nutrical in her food, she loves it lol.

At her age and size, she needs to eat more than twice a day. She really should have food available constantly.

She needs to be eating more often, 3-4 x's a day. I don't think it's her tail, does she cry when you touch it? The vet tech cut Turbo's tail too short & he had circulation problems. He has a rabbit tail, but his stump is fine.

She has food available to eat at all hours of the day. No she lets me touch it just fine, yeah a rabbit tail! thats what she has. will she grow into it?

1- As everyone has said, the pooping issue is definitely not normal, if your vet can't find an answer, go to another one.

2-Sleeping a lot is normal, she's a baby :)

3-Check the bottom of her paws to see if her fur has grown over her paw pads, sometimes that contributes to them slipping on the floor, she may need a trim.

4- My dog is super tiny too but at that age she was definitely eating more than a teaspoon of food twice per day. When my dog was a pup I fed her nutrical twice per day. A good amount can entice their appetite but too much can cause them to be too full to eat their regular food. If you read some dog food websites, you'll see that cesar dog food is not a high quality food. Like the other reader said, your pup should be eating more than twice per day. At least 3x

I agree with the others she needs to be eating at least 4 times a day and make sure you watch her water intake. She should be drinking a lot also which will help with her stools. When we first got Kyra she would scoot her little but to wipe it on the carpet lol. Gross but I guess at least she was clean lol. At nine weeks her stool should be firm but not hard it sounds like mild constipation to me. Kyra slept an awful lot even at 12 weeks I think some of them just require more sleep as puppies.

Having a tail docked short would in no way effect her pooping ability. It baffles me why the vet did not check her stool while she was at the vets. It is a very simple procedure to collect a stool sample from the rectum.

Have you talked to the breeder you got her from? It is very important to keep in touch with the breeder and ask them for advise. What kind of food are you feeding her? It is not that unusual for them to go off their food a little when they first go to a new home. She is awfully small so it is very important for her to eat. You don't want to drastically change her diet from what the breeder was feeding her. Things that might help is to grind up her dry puppy food a little bit in a blender so it is a little easier for her to eat. You can also soak some of the dry food a little and add just a tiny bit of canned food. When I am weaning puppies I leave out dry food but I also offer them some dry food mixed with a little canned food. I prefer the Pedigree Healthy Digestion canned food.

The dry food is not an okay brand, not great. I would get a better quality canned food, cesar is pure junk.
As to the wood floors. I may seem funny when she slides and hits things and then gets back up to play. But... she may do permanent damage to her head, neck, spine or legs one of these times. You might want to put some rugs down, or restrict her play to an area that has carpeting.
Keep a close eye on her, feed her frequently, and let her sleep when she wants. Good luck on your new baby and welcome.
