Jumping off Bed I have a pretty high bed and Teddy can never jump on to the bed but he LOVES jumping off. Its like a thrill for him or something. In the morning he sleeps on his bed and as soon as he wakes up I take him to pee and then i put him on my bed. Well he will jump off run around and come back so I can put him back on the bed. Then he'll jump off bring a toy and try to come back on. (its actually pretty cute) He will do this until he gets tired but throughout the day anytime I get off the bed he follows me. my cousin told me that this could be bad on his back so Ive been trying to put him down myself but he beats me to it. When he sees me reaching over to get him he jumps off. Im worried though. Is this really bad for him?? does anyone know?? please keep me posted! :) |
I don't know if it's bad for the back, but I do know that I've read about some broken legs here on YT, from the little ones just jumping off couches. If I were you, I would purchase some dog steps for Teddy. My husband built Raven a ramp for our bed. He even covered it with the same carpeting we have in our room. It's amazing how quickly I can get my husband motivated to do something if it's for the dog. Kim |

LOL my husband is the same way!!!! :D :D :D :D I would also try and get a ramp or stairs, Yorkies can get hurt when they jump off a bed. It's better to be safe. :) |
I have stairs for Rowdy and I have them at the couch, my husband's chair and the bed. I try really hard to get Rowdy to use them because I think jumping is hard on his knees and also I know that a wrong jump could result in a broken leg. Anyway, he uses them about 95% of the time - sometimes he gets excited though and jumps off right where he is - but I always try to get him to use the stairs. |
Edie has a ramp to get on and off our high bed, but she still leaps off when she is excited. My husband built this custom ramp. It is carpeted. Can't find the photo right now or I would post it. alison |
stairs 1 Attachment(s) This is what I made Mason |
I am one of the broken pup owners! Wosie did not jump off, but fell off the bed backwards when she backed up too quickly one night. Broken leg, emergency vet, surgery, and recovery all STINK baby... Definitely get some stairs or a ramp, but will your pup use them all the time? Hope so! :p |
I don't have stairs - but I have a piece of furniture at the foot of my bed. My dog can hop down to that and then down to the floor. He gets back up the same way. My dog also jumped off the bed all the time -- plus he jumps off the back of the sofa (which would like jumping off a 4th floor bldg for you and me) --- and he usually gets this done before I can even get near him. When my Yorkies chooses to jump - he has good control and lands very well. I'm more afraid that he might hurt himself if he slips or falls and doesn't land well. My Yorkie isn't real small. He's 5 pounds and growing. And there is almost nothing that he can't climb onto --one way or another. I think stairs for the bed is a wonderful idea. It will also help keep you from having to lift him back up on the bed all the time. Good luck! Carol Jean |
Thank you thanks so much for the suggestions... I hope he actually uses them bc I swear he LOVES jumping off. I'll probably put a treat at the end of the steps. :D Sometimes u gotta bribe these little ones.... thanks again! :) |
Back injuries can occur, there is alot of pressure applies to thier little backs when they jump from high places. Usually when they get older is when you will notice the effects though. They can also increase thier risk for luxating patella. Little dogs are just fragil, so stairs would be great. |
well my hubby just built my pups a ramp into our bed on sunday. we just ripped out the carpet in our living room over the weekend and installed laminate flooring so he took some scrap laminate and glued it together and cut a piece of the old carpet and glued it onto the laminate. it looks like the most rigged up thing that i have ever seen but hey it works and where men get these ideas i have no clue!!!! |
Great idea!!!! I am thinking what I could build Simon but more so how would I get him to use the thing after years of jumping and hopping. Hm! Jeni |
I stack a bunch of pillows, make stairs out of them, when I want Shelby to go up and down. Easy to remove if I want her to stay down. Need to protect the knees on these little critters. |
