Illegal "yorkie" title at pet store?? Hi Everyone, My husband and I recently were doing some after Christmas shopping and happened to go into one of those mall pet stores. They have a lot of adorable dogs and the place looked pretty clean. There was a dog that they titled as a pure Yorkie. But from looking at the puppy, he looked mixed. For one, he was abnormally large for a puppy that was 5mths old...about 8-9lbs. The face and features didn't look like a pure Yorkie. Is it illegal to call a dog a "Yorkie" if it's mix? We tried to ask the associates there and they said they think it was if it says so on the glass. The sales people were teens working there for the holidays...so I'm not even sure if they know about where the dogs come from. Just curious on how pet stores label dogs and is there any laws about it. |
Lorraine Unfortunately, I doubt there is anything that can be done. Unfortuantely, pet stores don't care and sell puppies as just another commodity. They come from puppymills who don't care about anything but money. The only time you could make a fuss is if they are being sold as registered purebreds and are not providing the registrations. I agree...I don't think it is probably illegal but it is defintely wrong. They are misleading lots of innocent people!! But if you can I would talk to the shop owner and see what they say. |
The fact that the pet store is selling Puppies, is the part that should be ILLEGAL! I'm sure the fact that they are claming the dog is somthing it is not, is the least of their problems..they are probably claiming it is Healthy, and not from a Puppy Mill also. |
Thanks for everyones input. I agree with all of you that these pet stores can be misleading. I just feel so bad for the little puppies. I wish I can take them all home. Next time, I'm in the store, I will definitely ask to speak to the owner and find out what's going on. |
