How does your Yorkie let you know when it's time to go outside?? I've noticed that lately Charlie has been growling at me when he's ready for his walk. LOL It's pretty cute. How does yours let you know it's time to go out. Either for a walk, or just let you know it's time to go out period? |
Ricky doesn't let me know...but Princeton has a few ways. When he wants something he will paw at me or paw at it....the door to go out...the fridge for food....his treat shelf or my nightstand for treats. He will also keep looking at what he wants and then me and then back to what he wants. He's also got this low growl type talk that he uses when he wants something. He's very creative and he's very good at getting my attention to get what he wants. |
Macaroni goes to the door and if I am not near he barks or comes and gets me |
My two "go" in a fenced side yard. Ziva "grumbles" at the garage door, Abby kicks a little set of bells I have thumbtacked to the baseboard. |
Toby grumbles at the gate when he has to go #1. When he has to go #2 he just stands at the gate with his back hunched up and looks miserable. |
During the day Bentley will do a little bark and Baxter, my Boxer will sit where his leash is and look up at it! lol Bentley in the middle of night if he has to go out, walks up from the end of the bed and does a low growl. Always fun to be woken up and have to go out especially in 7 degree weather! |
:D Harry rushes up to me and bashes me on the back of my knees, usually when I'm in the kitchen cooking, and he's quite big so it makes my knees buckle and I crash into the work-top...and then rushes to the back door :D Sally + Harry x |
Blazer rings the bell that hangs off the doorknob. Buddy (not a Yorkie) will just lay by the door until we notice him. |
Mine all come to wherever I am. They will either sit down and just stare intensely at me or stand up on the edge of the chair/couch or whatever I'm sitting on and just stare intensely right at me as to say "come already' get your butt women ! Than they corral me into the kitchen and over to the door by nudging me the entire way with their cold little noses. |
I have a Doggy Door which is accessible to my guys 24/7, so, I don't have to worry about potty issues. However, when they want to access something else, My Males use the "stare" method, and My Females push their noses against what (like a door) they want to access. |
Mine stand at the door and pace back and forth. |
barks at the door. |
Bevo will sit there and look and you then go to the back door or you do not see him heding for the door he will come back and try to lick you head back to the door . Abby will bark then head to the door and bark at the door |
chester goes to the door and goes ruff ruff and stares at me |
The growl is one of Gracie's way of communicating that she needs something. Usually she wants me to get something for her. Generally she barks when she wants to go out though, especially when I have not been paying attention as she feels I should. |
Both of mine will park their little buts right in front of me and just stare until I stand up then head for the door. If I wait to long Laddy will jump on my lap and run up my chest to lick me in the face. |
Toki will ring the jingle bells by our front door...Teddy will just obnoxiously growl and try to crawl on top of you. |
not wanting to encouraging barking I hung a ribbon with jingle bells on the end and Lola rings them when she has to go potty. Our house has three stories so this works well as I would not see her sitting by the door. |
It was mentioned that I try the bell thing a long time ago. I never did. How long did it take for you guys who use bells to train them to use them? |

This is a good video that is more step-by-step (he has some other good training videos too): |

Cool thanks. I am going to teach him this. :) |
I watched the video, we did it a little different, Lola did not know any tricks at the time. Each time we went out I would ring the bell and say lola go potty, Lola go potty. after about three days of doing this myself, I started lightly lifting her paw to the bell, after about two days, I started moving her paw to ring the bell, always saying Lola go potty, Lola go potty. Of course each time she went potty there were treats and praise. Finally after about a week she did it herself. I only have her to do this to go potty, if we go out to play or for a walk it's through a different door and no bells are involved. I do not want to get to the point that she rings it just to go out and play. So bells, leash, and out the front door, means potty only and we do this quick, it's out on a short leash, I never let her walk me around and we come right back in afterwards. In the summer, we often head right back out but through another door for a walk, but I Like to take her out first so she does her business at home. Lola went through a phase of ringing the bells for the heck of it, but I got wise pretty to that pretty soon so I started wrapping them up after we would come back in for a few hours. Now they are down all the time and since she knows ringing the bells only means potty (no fun playing) she only rings them when she has to go. Another reason I like the bells is when I travel to visit family I bring a set along, as soon as Lola sees where the bells are hung you can almost see relief like yeah I know where to go when I need to potty. Good luck with the training. |
My boys are pad and outdoor trained, but they prefer to go outdoors to poop. To tell me they want to go walking, they will stare me down with longing eyes, perform sits, or dance around me. If they have to go on the pad, they will come to me and get my attention in a variety of ways. Teddy wants to be held for a minute. Max will stand up next to my chair and paw at my leg. |

oh yeah...... Charlie burns holes in me with his big black eyes and if I dont feel them burning holes in me ( I usually do) he will jump up and down kind of like galloping in place LOL |
Heidi does the staring thing. She is puppy pad trained, so when I'm not home she goes by herself, but when I'm home she stands in the hall staring and trying to get me to follow her into the room that has the puppy pad. She insists I come and watch... Goodness knows she can't do that without a treat! Anytime she wants something I get the long stare. If that fails, out comes the paw. |
Since we are both retired Amy usually gets up in my husband's face and licks his nose. If that doesn't work she will start talking to both of us by running back in forth from him to me. Really works quite well. She taught herself that right when I thought there was no help in training her. |
Keno has always came and sat down in front of me and either stared or growled if the stare does not work. At night he gets in my face and does a little growl, thankfully that is not a regular occurence. He has been completely trained to outside since he was five months. He expects a treat each time, and you best not try and forget, that is when he gets in your face and does the BARK. He likes everything to run on schedule, breakfast at 7 am dinner at 5 pm and Mom in the kitchen cooking at 6 pm so Dad can give him handouts. If you vary from this he gets in my face and gives me the BARK, it is his Bossy Bark. |
I have always taken Gracie out at regular intervals. I think that is part of the reason her potty training was so successful. She is quite aware of when I am supposed to take her out and will let me know with a bark if I have gone too far over the limit. She thinks she can talk anyway so that is just one of her comments. |
