Puppies are not presents Thought this was a good post for new members and on lookers. Remember a puppy is not a Christmas present it is a living being that has needs and feelings. It is around a 15 year commitment and a lot of work. Please don't gift puppies. |

I agree // my next yorkie is my xmas gift but not getting till spring |
I always hope that people don't give puppies as gifts. If anyone reads this, and IS giving a puppy as a gift, please learn how to do it properly and how to properly take care of a puppy when giving it at *such* a busy, crazy, hectic, loud, overwhelming time of year. Puppies are fragile, young, vulnerable living creatures who've only been on the earth for a few weeks! Please, please, please treat them as such. |
I am happy you posted this! I see so many people wanting to give a pet for Christmas....whether it is a puppy, kitten or any live animal. Then in 3 months, when the cuteness has worn thin, they get rid of it because they "don't have time" for it! A big pet peeve of mine! Pets are for life! |
I agree to an extent. Giving an animal to anyone is extremely personal and a decision that needs to be discussed with the recipient regardless. However, I would love to be surprised with another Yorkie for Christmas!! |

Puppies are expensive so you would have to know someone's financial situation before giving one. Even people who love and have dogs don't always want another one or a puppy. I personally would want to pick out my pup and make sure it's coming from a reputable breeder. |
Wow...There are some mean comments in this thread. If someone wants a puppy and they make it aware to the person gifting that they can handle the responsibility I see no problem giving a puppy as a gift. Also, I know a lot of low income people that take care of their animals and even make sure they go to the vets and on a regular basis and are well cared for...It's nobody business what other people's financial situation is, that is a very personal touchy thing and a bit judgemental. I would never not get someone a puppy just because they don't make what my opinion of 'enough money' is. This is the time of year to be nice to each other, and not be so mean and give some compassion. We can't tell people what they can and can't do, and chances are if someone has their mind set on gifting a puppy they are going to do it knowing full well the responsibilities. Besides, yorkies stay cute forever! My experience has been very positive with puppy gifts, I've yet to meet anyone who got one and just abandoned it or stopped paying attention to it after a few months...Then again most people don't just go giving out puppies to just anybody, especially yorkies. I even know someone that got a Rottweiler puppy worth a good amount in exchange for painting a garage...That guy kept the dog for 12 years until it died from a tumor. |
WHAT MEAN POSTS???? It's true a dog is for life, and if ur gonna give a puppy as a present u need to make sure that little dog is gonna be looked after, I learnt the hard way, I bought a puppy for my dh parents and then his dad took a brain tumour and the pup was to much (which is understandable) WELL I took the pup as I was the the one that was responsible for it, he is with us today and his name is gino ,and is now 3yrsold, I was responsible for his wee life as I bought him,,, the members on here r making people aware of things before buying a puppy for a gift ' also I've heard of the puppy gifts ending up in shelters as people think they want them till they realize the hard work involved, and as for having money the I wud never buy my son and girlfriend a pup as they can't even feed themselves . |
