New Yorkie Owner with questions Our family has a 5 month old Yorkie (Ozzie) who is awesome, but difficult to figure out. I’m curious if this is just his personality orjust a puppy phase. When he is tired he’s a snuggler, but when he wants to playhe growls, nips and backs off when you try to pet him… Here is a video of thegrowling, is this a bad sign? Thanks for any advice. https://skydrive.live.com/redir?resid=2682958F60FA0842!382&authkey=!ALUadEWJ GZAePYk&ithint=video%2c.mp4 |
I don't think id let him bite me. Redirect to a chew toy. Just a thought. |
He's just practicing his defensive moves. This is typical of a young dog like him. He just doesn't understand that his teeth are sharp, and hasn't leaned that he has to limit his bite to play like that with humans. Get a tug toy involved where he can spend some energy. |
When he bites, sternly tell him no, and redirect him to his toy. We had that problem with one of our girls. She would get caught up in playing and nip our hand. We sternly tell her "no bite" and redirect her to the toy. Worked very well. Just make sure your stern no isn't a screaming match at them. I've seen some people of that and it's complete overkill and unnecessary. They just need to hear. A strong, firm, simple no and have the problem redirected and most always learn what they're supposed to bite and not supposed to bite. Haha |
Whenever you use your hands for your dog to attack, they think your hands are fair play for biting like a toy. I think the other posts have it correct....get a toy and let him bite the toy. Don't use your hands. It's difficult because you want to play, but your hands and fingers cant be used as toys! Good luck and Merry Christmas Diane and Oscar :aimeeyork |
Agreed, he only playing and I would not encourage this type of play with your hands always always use a toy. Also it would be wise to never pet (reward) him or praise him when he is in this style of play mode it will only reinforce the rough behavior. |
