My 6 months old yorkie chewed mechanical pencil...I need help.. Hi everybody...this is my first time here and I need your help...I have 6 month old Yorkie, her name is Luna. I was on the phone and she chewed a mechanical pencil...one that looks like pen, with plastic cover, and changeable pencil stick. I don't know if she actually swallowed any piece of plastic or pencil, I called vet and they told me to watch her for 24 hours. So far she has been acting fine, playing around, eating. Now she is sleeping, but she is my first pet ever and I am freaking out. Any suggestion will be helpful. Thank you very much. |
Welcome. Can you reconstruct the pieces to give you an idea of how much if any she ate? It's difficult to say if she ate any if it will cause any problems. I've had mine chew pens and be fine but I would keep a close eye on her. Did the vet say what to watch for? I would watch her poop for any signs of bleeding and if she starts throwing up. I would get her to the vet right away then. Other than do Xrays I don't know what else could be done. Others may have some advice for you. I hope Luna is just fine. |
Reply She seems fine...I did not think of that...just picked up the pieces and threw them away. they were all in small pieces but she usually won't eat or swallow stuff like that, so I am hoping she did not eat it. Only thing is when she pooped it was diarrhea. But other than that she seems happy, plays around, I can't see any differences. Fingers crossed she will be fine. |
I would be more concerned about the lead from the pencil than the plastic. If the diarreah persists I would make sure and take her in right away. |
I think pencils use graphite not lead anymore but not 100% sure. I agree if diarrhea persists I would get her in to the vet. |

Thank you all so much...! this helps me a lot, she has been doing ok, she ate well, and now she's sleeping. She does not seem as excited as she usually is, but I think it is because of the earlier diarrhea. So hoping that she will feel better by tomorrow morning. Thank you all again...! |
Lola ate some plastic, she was acting totally normal in every way but I called the ER vet to make sure. They told me to just watch her. She was fine and passed the plastic in a day or 2. Also the above posters are right, it's graphite not lead. |

Everything in sight For us our yorkies are able to find everything that is out of sight. Coming home to a house with snow in it is funny....12 rolls of toilet paper shredded throughout the three floors just makes me shake my head. My wife is an artist and we have found paintbrushes chewed to pieces and we know they were four feet from the floor. In thirty years of raising Yorkies we have learned to manage every situation and realize it is the hunter in them and they have not suffered any serious side effects yet. They are tougher than you think. But we still try to Childproof the house for our furbies. |
Gizmo has eaten worse, he is the master at getting into stuff no matter how high or put away it is. As long as they are acting fine they will pass it in a day or so and you will be in the clear. If they start acting funny then I would go to the emergency vet but other then that just try your best to keep things up. |
Hopefully anything she swallowed will pass through. Make sure she is pooing OK and without any difficulty for several days. I hope everything comes out OK for your and your puppy. Puppy proofing goes on forever. |
Thank you guys for all the useful info. and some funny personal stories about your pups...She has been doing just fine...running around, acting crazy, trying to break stuff, etc...:) I see that they are very spoiled little creatures, it's either their way or highway...but they are so adorable can't blame them...:) |
