Diabetic Yorkie Hello Everyone!!! My name is Colleen and I have an 8 yr old Yorkie, Madison. Maddie was diagnosed with diabetes about 2 years ago. She was put on Humulin N 2 shots a day. Now that Vetsulin has been re-released we have switched her to that about 2 months ago. Sugar is still high every single day. I cannot bring her sugar down. The vet has her on Royal Canin Satiety dry food and Calorie Control High Fiber wet food. My question to my fellow Yorkie mommies and daddies.... who has a diabetic? And how do you control their diet? I would love love your feedback!!! Thanks to all!!!! Coll & Maddie :animal-pa:animal-pa |
Thankfully, either of my furbutts are diabetic. But this was something I was interested in so I read up a little on it. Could you share what your daily routine is with her? Like with exercise, treats, etc.. |
Her insulin is given every morning at 9am and every night at 9pm She is with either me or my mom during the day. Her daily activites: she plays with my moms Bichon and teacup Maltese. She literally takes a nap in the afternoon and plays again. She gets no table food, no treats, nothing. I am curious about changing her diet to boiled chicken, fresh greenbeans, boiled Salmon, boiled turkey etc.... Having to watch carbs I would not be able to add anything white such as rice or potato. Carbs=Sugar But i'm at a point now where I need to start researching diets and seeing what other diabetic pet parents are doing. |
She plays during the day with my moms Bichon and teacup Maltese She gets her shots at 9am and 9pm No treats no snacks other than her prescription food I am looking into seeing if a diet of boiled chicken, fresh green beans, boiled salmon, boiled turkey etc... would be better for her. I'm really thinking it's her food that is causing her sugar to stay high even on the Vetsulin. |
I remember reading that you should give the insulin shot within an hour after feeding? Is that what you do? |
Yes she gets her shot with her wet food. Sometimes i'm lucky to get low readings but they are few and far between. |
Just from reading different articles, there's really no "right answer" for the food. I don't know if you've seen this article but it seems to have a lot of good info. Canine Diabetes: Symptoms, Diagnosis, Treatment, and Diet - Whole Dog Journal Article I think food does have a lot to do with managing diabetes. I hope you find the right combo. If it's not too much trouble, I'd like to hear about any updates/changes Colleen has with different food. :) |
Thank you so much for that article!!! I very much appreciate it!!!! I will keep you informed of Maddie's health. :animal-pa:animal-pa |

Thanks so much for posting this article. It really tells you a lot about diabetes. |
I see that the OP has not been on since posting on 12/12/13, but in case she comes back or anyone else sees this: Have you had your dog tested for Cushings? Many dogs have both, and if Cushings is untreated it can result in insulin resistance and inability to bring glucose down. I'm just learning tons about both as Meika was diagnosed with diabetes 2 days ago, and we will be testing her for Cushings too at some point because her symptoms fit it to a T. |
Diabetes & Diet I searched old posts by LadyMom who had a diabetic dog, and she provided excellent resources. Here is info on diet: Pets with Diabetes: Diet and the main site of Pets With Diabetes is here: Pets with Diabetes: Home Page |
I would also suggest that you get her to a veterinary specialist. Your vet should not allow her glucose to remain so high. Do you have a veterinary college in your area? Her diet is apparently not conducive to lowering her glucose. That is another area you might look into changing. There are some good all natural commercial raw foods out there that may be a healthier alternative. He cells cannot receive the nutrition or even the hydration she needs when her glucose levels are so high. |
