yorkie ears my yorkie pups dad has erect ears but the mom doesn't is there any way that their ears will stand ? |
With puppies, the breeder will tape their ears to make them stand. Do you already have your puppy at home, and the ears aren't standing? If so, taping them may help. Can someone explain how to tape them...bc I can't remember the correct way to do it. |
Definitely find out the proper way because I think it can cause more harm than good if done the wrong way. My first suggestion is to make sure the ear hair is trimmed if it isn't..get some of the weight off. If that doesn't help after a bit, taping may work. I would get the advice and steps from one of our breeders here on the forum, if possible. |
There are a lot of videos on YouTube showing proper taping methods. I tried trimming Gizmos ear hair short but that did not work so well, they stand up about half way now at six months, so I decided he was fine with that :-) you can also give them a little cottage cheese or yobaby yogurt for extra calcium to make them stronger. My groomer confirmed o me though that the reason his did not stand all the way up, is the leather of his ears is too thick and heavy and that thy probably never will due to the weight of his ears. I myself decided against taping his ears earlier, because he had been through so much when I rescued him, and he can hold them up when he wants, like if something draws his attention, I think he just likes them perfectly the way they are :-) |
It doesnt matter if you tape the ears or not, its genetics in the end. You can tell when a yorkie has it's ears taped, they tend to look more ..oddly shaped, and it doesn't always work. I never taped my dogs ears and they stand up, her mom and dad had ears that stood up so it happened on its own as with most dogs with stand up ears. If the ears never stand up it means there is a genetic disposition to that somewhere in the blood line, personally I wouldn't breed a yorkie with floppy ears or an oversized one but a lot of people do and sell them to people thinking they will have a dog that looks like the breed standard that ends up anything but. |
Make sure you keep the hair on the ears trimmed short. The weight of the hair on the ears can help weigh them down. Hope you can get the hang of taping because it will certainly help bring the ears up. |
