Getting use to Bows? Hi fellow Yorkie Talkers, hope you're all staying warm! Acorn's hair is getting so long that she can't see without a ponytail. The only problem is she HATES them!! Immediately takes it right out. The plain elastics seem to last longer, but not much long. I love the look of the pony tails, and I don't want to have to cut back her bangs because it looks silly on her. Do they ever "get use to it"? Am I being cruel in making her wear one? Doesn't help that my fiancé likes helping her out and removing it from her head... Thank you :-) |
My two got used to the bows and let me put them in every morning, but that doesn't mean they didn't try to remove them when I wasn't looking! They broke away a lot of their hair doing this and I finally had to break down and cut them off. I tried growing them out but finally had a groomer trim them. Looking down into their sweet little faces is much better now! |
Billi is still getting used to the hair ties as well. I use the little baby elastics and try to keep it as loose as possible without her hair falling out. I'll give her a lot of treats and praise her a ton. Give her lots of compliments & pets "don't you look do pretty!" and stuff like that. If I catch her rubbing her head on the ground, I'll stop her and make sure the band isn't too tight. She's getting better. There's also barrettes/clips from the baby section of stores (I found some at walmart) they're tiny... You might try using those to clip their hair back. Maybe they'll like that better? It's a lot of distraction and praise and they should get used to it eventually. |
Did you start out using just a little grooming band? It's best to break them in slowly. Groomers generally use tiny little bands and then place the bow because clips and just one band generally will not hold the hair very long. Your pup can't really feel the little grooming bands if they are put in properly. As they get used to having the hair up in the band you can eventually add a bow. Always distract them with a treat and maybe some play after placing the band or bow. If it is in properly they will forget it is there. The hair should never tug on the pup's skin or eyes at all. I buy my bands here: ![]() If you go to the featured Yorkie products for sale area here on YT you will find a link to the Bow Biz site. They have a page that gives some good instructions on band and bow placement with pictures and a video. |
I start Izzy with just bands..then the bows with bands..they don't seem to bother her at all.. but if i make it to tight, she hates it's and she will have it out with an hour by rubbing her head on the carpet, furniture etc...lol., I change then about every 2 or 3 days and she does great. |
My boys tried rubbing their topknots out when they were younger. They got used to wearing them. The key is to put the topknot in, make sure it isn't too tight or pulling on the ears, and then distract them as much as possible. I distracted Max and Teddy with walks. Praise also helps. They like feeling special. This works with clothes too. |
