Too Young to be in Heat? So my 6 month old baby Maggie got on top of my 1 year old Molly last night and started humping her:eek: I looked at her vulva and it looks enlarged but I haven't seen any blood. Does this mean she is getting ready to go in heat? I also noticed this morning that Molly was sniffing Maggie's rear and she has never done that. I was going to get Maggie spayed after the 1st of the year but should I schedule her now in case or wait? |
I don't have a spayed female but I have friends that do...they waited till after the first heat cycle then had the procedure done. I don't think 6 months is too young for her to go into heat...I've heard smaller breeds mature faster than larger breeds so it could be considered normal. |
If she's humping another female, that's usually her asserting her dominance. Nothing sexual really.. As for the swollen vulva, you'd prolly want to get her seen by a vet to be sure. These lil ones can go into heat even before 6 months, so it's definitely a possibility. For me, personally I had Billi spayed before her first heat. She needed several baby teeth pulled and I wasn't interested in waiting til after her heat anyway. I'd do a little more research to decide what you think is right for her. But def. consult your vet. |
Kyra came in at exactly 6 months. You won't see blood for a little while but if her vulva is swollen do not let her around intact males. We waited until Kyra's growth plates were done to have her spayed which was right at a year old. |
Thanks everyone! I made an appointment for her to see the vet. I was going to get her spayed after the holidays and all her permanent teeth were in, but mother nature drives the decision ;) If she's not in heat and most of her adult teeth are in I will schedule her spay. My molly didn't go into heat and I had her spayed at just under a year. Yes she was humping another female my older but smaller yorkie. They both are fighting to be alpha LOL I keep my pups on a leash and only out to potty. My neighbor potties the girls during the day while I'm at work. She has an intact male chihuahua. I told her under no circumstances is she to let them out together until I get her to the vet to see if she's in heat and have her spayed. She is very responsible about that. I don't understand why she doesn't get him neutered but that's her choice. |
If she is already in heat or the early stages they may not want to do the spay right now. It is much more complicated to spay a female in heat. They usually like to wait a month or two after the heat cycle is over before doing the surgery. |
My Leila just got done with her first heat and she is 6 months old. Sounds like your baby is in her early signs of heat. |
I had Callie spayed at 9 months before he first heat to lower the risk of mammary cancer. She still occasionally humps but she does it when she is mad lol. Humping doesn't mean they are going into heat but if she is going into heat I think you have to wait 6 weeks to get her spayed because it becomes more dangerous. At 6 months old the vet can still pull her baby teeth that she has not yet lost. |
