Why are dogs given up? Why Are Dogs Given Up? - Petfinder This study was conducted by the National Council of Pet population study and policy. Look at the bottom to see the membership group! Some interesting facts collected. What I found surprising that the top 10 reasons dogs were given up only accounted for about 40 odd % of the total. No one single reason was over 10%. Interesting to me, an overwhelming % surrendered animals prior to 3yrs old and ones that were sourced from family or friends. I am reminded based on some stats the APPA - American Pet Products Association who conducts massive 2yr surveys that approximately 40% of the 83 million dogs in homes in the States are sourced from family or friends. This would not match up to what my perception is. I thought there would be more grouping around several reasons. Here on this board we see, having a baby, moving, being forced to move by landlord changing dog ownership rules, behavioural problems and or lack of ability to housebreak. More study is needed in this arena. I think nobody wants to see any dog having to go to a shelter anywhere. This study seems to underscore the importance of veterinary care and obedience training as two preventative measures/tools that might help to reduce the surrender of dogs. |
Very interesting. I see a lot of posts on YT about breeding their females & wanting to give the puppies to family & friends. Sadly, they are given away w/out consideration of the home being the perfect forever home...simply bc they're people they know. I do understand why the study says the most pets given up are from these situations. |
Yes interesting stats. You know that and I may be very wrong, but I am just looking at numbers, maybe the biggest volumne problem is those Pet owners who breed their dogs. If that is true, then a massive concerted educational effort encompassing public opinion, vets, and other authoritative sources might help to reduce the number of pets given up at shelters. I think something along the lines of, it is a Very Bad Idea to Breed your Pet. Something that is developed to twig what must be some very disparate reasons why Pet owners decide to breed Fluffy to Molly. I am not saying that Puppy Mills are a scourge and should be eradicated from the face of this earth, but it seems that they don't supply the highest number of dogs to the dog owning public. What continues to astound me, is that with 83 odd million dogs in the States and 20 odd million dogs in Canada being owned by folks, that any dog ends up in a shelter for very long!! I mean given even a very modest 1% new demand for dogs over the dog owning public, 830,000 new dogs to place in homes..... And the demand is much higher than 1%..................at least as far as I can ascertain. |
