Puppy weight off chart My 20 week old male weighs 5 pounds already. The breeder said he would be between 5 and 6 1/2 pounds. His parents are both champions. The mother weighs 5.5 pounds and the dad 5.4. He is one of a litter of four. I just don't see how it's possible for him to be this big already and end up at 6 1/2 pounds. |

Breeders can't guarantee weight. Perhaps a grand parent or great grand parent was a larger dog... It happens. We have some porkie yorkies on here that are 14-16 pounds. |
I think I read somewhere that original(?) yorkies were bigger than the sizes we're used to seeing/hearing about these days. Even though both parents are little, it just could be that he picked up some of the original breed size gene. I think the breeders make their best guess on size of the pups. But I don't think they can absolutely guarentee it. I'm no expert though. :) Perhaps others can give better insights. |
Breeders can only give there best guess for the weight the puppy will be some get bigger and some get smaller. Looks like yours will be bigger. |
I want to say Gizmo was about that big at that age and he is now 2 1/2 and 10-11 lbs. He is full breed AKC too. They just end up big sometimes. Love my tea pot! |
He's from a reputable show breeder and AKC judge going back to 1965, so none of the dogs in his lineage were large dogs. |
It's called genetics. Even small dogs can throw a larger pup every once in a while because of the origins of the breed. 6.5 pounds is still within the breed standard. |
Rocco was about 5lbs at 7-8 months, and he's now almost 10 lbs at 4 years old. However, he is very solid and healthy, not fragile, which makes me happy. Enjoy your baby whatever size he turns out to be. |
How many weeks was he when you bought him and what did he weigh then? |

It really is hard to tell with these little ones. Kyra stopped growing at around 8 months and Laddy grew until he was almost 2 (filled out more I mean). Laddy was only a few ounces bigger than Kyra at 12 weeks but is over 2lbs bigger now. |
