Will they get used to it?
 
My husband and I installed laminate hardwood floors in our living room this weekend and the girls just cant walk on it. It really makes me laugh just watching them slip and slide all over but I feel so bad for them. Will they get used to it eventually or will they always slip and slide all over. They cant hardly stand on it.

As long as you keep their pads shaved and nails clipped, they "should" get use to it...but with slippery floors, be careful of knee injuries.

Maybe I dont understand but why would slippery floors cause knee injuries? Thanks for making me aware of it though.

We have laminate floors as well. Cali will slide if she runs on it. My old pom can hardly walk on it without sliding.

if they slid enough and fell with their leg wrong, bigtime knee problems. small dogs often have luxating patellas (sp?) as well.

exactly. If injury is bad enough...leg is akwardly underneath them and then they slide and hit something...the knee can slip out of place...this is and example of an environmental LP.

Very true! We are ripping the carpet out of our living room and hall all the way to the kitchen next month. It's going to be something! Gonna keep the carpet in our bedrooms, I actually like a carpeted bed room. Keeping the paws trimmed is a must on hard floors.

Ok thanks for the info I already have a couple of area rugs but maybe a few more wouldnt hurt so that they could have some areas to walk safely. They are not in the living room very often though me and my hubby stay upstairs were the computer and bedrooms are most of the time so they are rarely downstairs in the living room and upstairs is fully carpeted.

I have beautiful laminate flooring and my daughter recently got lovely hardwood floors. Both our dogs went through a week or two having trouble walking ---but believe me - they all adjusted very well. However, they still do a little slipping and sliding once in a while.

My daughter and I both have some area rugs - do you?

PS: The first time my sister's retriever came over he was totally afraid of my floors and wouldn't even walk on them. After a few visits, he is doing just fine and gets around on them as well as I do.
