Baby teeth and breeding Hey, this is my first time here. :D I recently purchased three Yorkies, which I got because I've always loved Yorkies and have always wanted one. I did my research and brought home three wonderful dogs with great temperment, and I feel that they represent the breed well. We are planning on breeding and showing these dogs(I do have a mentor to help me with both). Now that all of my pups are around 8 months old two of them need to have their canine baby teeth pulled. My vet told me that because of this I shouldn't breed them. I guess I haven't seen anything about not breeding Yorkies that don't loose a couple of baby teeth. What are your thoughts. thanks anna |
Many kids must have baby teeth pulled. perhaps he was suggesting not to breed them because of other reasons. Retained teeth is not a fault,an over bit or underbite would be considered a fault and should not be bred. hope this helps and welcome |
I have not heard of this either?? Do they have a bad bite?? |
All of my yorkies have a good scissor bite, good knees and everything else. The vet hasn't even looked at them, I just talked to her on the phone. She asked if I had them spayed yet. I said no that they are intended for breeding, and then she said i shouldn't breed them. :( I thought that she was a little quick to jump to this comclusion. Thanks. :confused: |
I would get a 2nd opinion from another vet. My specializes in canine repro and has helped select a sound foundation. He NEVER told me to eliminate something from my breeding program because of retained puppy teeth. That sounds odd to me. Especially that she hasn't even seen the puppies yet. Becareful, some vets are not fond of breeders. Yours may be one of them. Again, I would suggest getting a second opinion and find another vet. |

I find my vet is not the best evaluator of good breed bitches or studs. Unless, I am having studies done that require a vet's expertise, such as hip studies or bile acid studies... Other breeders have a different viewpoint so trust your mentor. These Yorkies have retained baby teeth very often and it is not a fault in the ring unless the teeth have stayed in so long that they effect the spacing and placement of the permanent teeth.. |
I would have to agree with the others here. If you are serious about breeding which you obviously are, I would try to find a good canine theriogenologist in your area. Does your mentor use one? Yorkies are difficult to breed and retained baby teeth are just a common breed trait but not a breeding fault. There wouldn't many to breed if it were Haha! A good reproductive vet can help you evaluate your dogs and decide what is best for your future program. They know the tests to conduct as well. They would be a great addition to your team.
