We brought Jack home earlier and I have some questions I went and picked up Jack today, our 7 1/2 week old yorkie, at about 7, it is now 12 midnight and he still hasn't peed or pooped. The breeder told us she had eaten and pooped before I got there at 7 but I have fed him since then and nothing. I am wondering if I may not have fed him enough or if maybe I'm not patient enough. People on here are saying after food, play, or waking up, to take the dog outside to the potty spot. I have done it after all of those yet no pee or poop. It is cold outside and he gets a little shivery after being out there for a little bit. Just wondering if you guys have any tips or advice. |
Welcome to Yorkie Talk. Has Jack done anything yet? Puppies are often nervous when going to their new home and they can hold it a long time. My boys both went over 6 hours before doing anything. Because your puppy is so young and the weather is cold, I recommend using piddle pads indoors for at least a couple of weeks. |

Is it even ok for a puppy to be outside at 7 weeks of age?? I am thinking more in the lines of vaccinations rather than weather. If a pup isn't fully vaccinated, it may not be good for them to be outside on the ground where they can pick up diseases. Pet stores or any public places would also be a no no!! 7.5 weeks old is awfully young for a pup to be away from it's mom and litter mates :( 12 weeks and up is the recommended age. I am sure the move to a new home, at any age is a bit traumatic though. It may take him a few days to adjust to the new house and new routine....including a potty routine. The pee pads are a great idea!! It's really too cold for little ones to go outside in the winter. My 4 lb guy wears a snow suit to go on walks when it's 50 degrees out, so I'd imagine it's got to be freezing to a little puppy. |
I agree with all of the above and at that age you may have to feed canned food and if not drinking syringe water to this little one. I helped my sister-in-law with one that young and it was quite a challenge. Definately use pee pads. To start with you made need to soak a tiny bit of urine up on one so they know that is where to go. If he doesn't potty soon I would get in touch with my vet right away. Welcome to YT. |
Such a young baby! Probably scared spitless. Keep lights dimmed, keep him warm, no sudden moves around him, no loud noises, etc., until he acclimated to his new home. He might be too scared to eat, therefore hasn't needed to pee yet. I'd try some Karo syrup on a finger and see if he'll lick it off your finger. If not, dropper feed him some Karo water so he does't get dehydrated nor hypoglycemic. Is the breeder available for consult? |
Lola was almost 13 weeks when I brought her home and she went like 12 hours without going to the bathroom. She also wouldn't eat until I bought her Cesar puppy food, it's junk food but I needed her to eat. |
